Hi guys I am kinda new to the 40k hobby, have vague memories of space marines floating around in my youth lol. Not decided on what to collect yet and was actually looking for advice on this front as I have lots of questions and still waiting for my rulebook to arrive (royal mail be damned!)

If someone could point me in the right direction to ask these questions it would be real nice. The questions being about army composition and what can be fielded (mostly relating to ork 'looted' tanks what not).

Hi, welcome to 40k and to Dakka. The forum has sections just for rules, tactics, army lists, etc. Any questions you have you can also search and it almost always has been asked before. What armies interest you? It may behove of you to read around and see which army you enjoy the backstory of for your first army. An army you can put your personal touches on and passion into becomes very special.

Thats the thing I have read pretty much everything I can get my hands on for some of the armies that interest me. I have been a fan of the 40k novels for awhile now. Likely due to the Cain series of books I enjoy mainy the following armies (in no real order of preference which is the problem): Ork's, Imperial Forces (IG+SM) and Tyranids.

I guess I would like to start with an army that has a larger amount of bigger units. I love to create and paint models so the actual playability what what I get doesn't bother me over much but it would be a plus.

Welcome to Dakka. Fellow newcomer here.
I have a couple of looted wagons and I took them to my local GW. The guy in the store said I could field them for friendly games but they would come under scrutiny if I were to take them to a Tournament.

I don't really plan on playing in any tournies (at least not atm) so at best would just be for the occasional friendly match. I have basically decided to go with orks after seeing some of the inspiration conversions here on dakka, i hope to adding my own in the future!
