I was wondering if anyone here on dakka has had experience with a possibly dead ps3? In my case I have a launch model 80gb and have been using it without problems since 2006. Two nights ago while playing a game my screen went grey, the system beeped, the lights flashed yellow and then a steady flashing red. when I turn the system on now it makes a noise like its trying to eject the disc(or berth a calf) but fails to do so and does the whole flashing business. I vacuumed out any dust, tried booting it without the hardrive in it, no dice. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I really don't want to be down a backwards compatible ps3 AND a copy of MGS4.

perhaps if I pray to the Omnissiah...

I'm sad to say it's likely dead, Yellow light is usually the ps3's equivalent of the xbox's red ring.
One thing that CAN work is if you run the ps3 in the fan clearing mode.
If you don't know how to do this, (this is for the original fat ps3's)
turn it off at the switch on the back then turn it on while holding the power button on the front at the same time.
Sometimes that can fix it, otherwise, it's likely buggered.

Yeah, it should always atleast boot the game out, but sometimes will give the system some life.
My brother father and I have all had ps3's since launch, one had the same problem as yours, my brothers sounds like a hoover and mine's still going strong to this day. they're tough old machines xD

I lost my launch model 80G backwards compatible PS3 to the Yellow Light after five years. My dad recently had the same trouble (my parents are both gamers) and he spent a lot of time watching YT vids about fixing them. He ultimately ended up baking the mother board in the oven to soften the solder or something. Thing is, it worked but only for about a week. So he took my advice and just bought a slim.

I didn't think the 80's were backwards compatible?
I thought it was only the 60's?

They were until shortly after the 60's were discontinued. Then they re-released it with less usb ports and look out the memory card slots. for why sony, for why...

the backwards compatibility was one of the reasons I got that model. I guess though now I can just put my ps2 on an AB swtich If/when I get a new system.

I had the exact same problem with mine last year... and I'm sorry to say that yours is dead. And the only way to get that disk is to actually tear it down and take it out.

And if you're drinkin' well, you know that you're my friend and I say "I think I'll have myself a beer"
