Subject: Painting Dark Green for Necrons

Hello i'm interested in trying to emulate the dark green color similar to the scheme GW had portrayed with their necron vehicles. However, it boggles my mind on what color they actually used as it seems to be black with a tint of green.
Caliban green their darkest green is much too green to match the scheme and incubi darkness has too much of blue. So obviously the way to go is mixing abadon black and caliban green to get the desired result. Having said that, what do you all think the paint ratio should be?
Also as I am just using standard brushes (not air-based ones) is possible to get a consistent result everytime i mix the paint?
Are there any other color combination or techniques that can give a similar result for the said scheme? Perhaps just abadon black body with bright green highlights?

Have you tried warp stone glow? I think that's the happy medium green they use. Your talking about the all black scheme with the green edge highlight/general highlighting color?

I think this guy (Ron) nailed the Necrons "green" with his scheme and use of dry-brushing/washing.

After that, prime and basecoat the whole thing black. Once that dries, it's onto the drybrushing for the highlights. You'll use two colors here, GW Snot Green for the first pass and GW Scorpion Green for the second pass on the prominent edges only.
I used a large "tank sized" brush and made sure I focused my efforts on the edges and not the whole or more importantly the flat surfaces of the model. The less paint you get on the flat surfaces here will save you clean up time in a later step. It still goes real quick with a big brush though.
With your drybrushing done, it's one good wash over the whole thing with GW Thraka Green. This will mute the highlights slightly and remove some of the lighter stray drybrush marks that are on the flat surfaces. Make sure to let this dry completely before going onto the next step.

The black that is used in this model, looks greenish. Could that be the lighting? Also it is mentioned that he dry brushed strictly on the edges. Not the body. Seems legit I guess
Wonder how he did it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Chancetragedy wrote:Have you tried warp stone glow? I think that's the happy medium green they use. Your talking about the all black scheme with the green edge highlight/general highlighting color?
Yes I'm talking about the black areas. Highlight are easy enough to understand but its the black that frustrates me. Do you think its simply just a black or could it be a mix of sorts?

Well...he said wash it all in Thrakka Green. Even washing the black areas will give a slight green tint to them eventually....just don't glop/slop it on so that it dries in puddles/pools.

Primarily, the green highlights on black give a bit of an optical illusion. Your brain expects to see green highlights on a green base, so it will see the black with green highlights and make the connection that the black must actually be a very dark green. It's similar to how when watching television, it's just a series of still pictures being shown at the rate of 30 per second, but your brain fills in the blanks and creates the illusion of smooth, continuous motion...because that's what it expects to see.
I did close to the same thing on my anni barges - prime black, hard edge it with fairly bright greens, no wash - and was surprised at how much it changed my perception of the black primer.

Quick related question. What colors would you recommend if someone were want to use this technique but with reds instead of greens?

Probably Mephiston Red from GW and Flat Red from the Vallejo Model Color range. The Mephiston Red is a base paint so it will have better coverage over the black, and the Flat Red is similar to the old GW Blood Red but with less orange in the color.
