I want to use dire avengers but it's £41 for ten. Can you use guardians as them without using green stuff?

Most people are going to be fine with it as long as you don't have both Guardians and Dire Avengers in your list such that it becomes difficult to tell which is which.

This, plus if you have extra bits use them to kit-bash some extra bling to further differentiate between the two.

Paint 'em blue, and I'm not sure most people would have any problem with them, as long as you don't have similar looking Guardian models (ones that you're actually using as Guardians).
However, it would be nice if you could "spice them up" a little bit, adding different helmets or something of that ilk. Try a bit of green stuff sculpting though, it's not that hard and it's a good thing to get skilled at.

As far as I know, there's not much difference between the two units visually (aside from the obvious Exarch) other than the crests and the targetters. I have used Guardians models for Dire Avengers for years, as my buddy was getting out of 40K and gave me a great deal on them.
As long as the rest of the army is not blue, the simplest possible idea would be to paint the Guardians in the usual Dire Avenger scheme, and point out to your opponent that the blue ones with white faces are Dire Avengers, and the ones in your normal army scheme are the guardians.

Sure you can...
But why would you?
I'm using my dire avengers as gaurdians.

why? Have you looked at the new prices on dire avengers? They are almost twice as expensive as guardians

They absolutely are, the point to damage ratio vs marines is the best in the game.
Ork shoota boys were some of the best at 54pts per marine kill but guardians are at 27points!

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Get greenstuff and/or miliputty and make helmet plumes and loin cloths or whatsitcalled hip cloths. Miliputty dries harder but is more difficult to get detail into so serves as a good base for modelling the softer greenstuff on top of.
As for the other differences between the two - no one will notice that the Guardian catapult is shorter unless they know it is.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums. |

I did exactly this at the NOVA (5th edition). Back then, I ran 5 x 5 DA and no Guardians to ensure there was no confusion. Nobody there even made a comment about it. I am not sure anyone even noticed.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |
