I don't really know that much about the fantasy lore, but there seem to be some pretty eerie similarities between Nids and Lizardmen (mainly the whole "spawning pool" thing).
Could the Lizardmen be some kind of remnant of the nids, left behind to repopulate a dead planet and prepare it for the next feeding cycle?

The Lizardmen have conscious thought and can be considered sentient
Tyranids are just engineered to kill and eat ...
Most tyranids don't come from spawning pools (even if they do are spawned, like any living creature ...), Lizardmen come from those just because they're aquatic reptiles (at least during the first part of their lives)
Don't think there's any kind of connection, however remote it might be
It's an established "fact" that the Slanns were left behind by the Old Ones as caretakers

No. Lizardmen were created by the Old Ones. They are closer to Orks and Elves / Eldar than to the nids, who are from an entirely different galaxy all together.

No, the Old Ones have been killed by the C'Tan / Necrons even before the time of WHFB.

No, the giant maw that the Ogre's worship was something Tyranidlike, not the stuff of the lizardmen. (What Tyranids would create a written language that the lizardmen could understand?)

I have a hard time seein Tyranids use warp gates to move a planet, Terraform it and create life on it.. They are more likely to eat all life on it..

1.) Fantasy and 40k universe are now separate to avoid too many contradictions.
2.) Even if they were still one universe, does this fellow look like he could teach High Elves the complex art of magic?

40K and WHFB have nothing in common, thankfully. They did at one point because they were lazy. But ultimately it made both universes have difficulty expanding independently. Like if some guy wrote a BL library it would have to correlate to an entire other universe.

And since they have trouble correlating within each universe separately....
