I'm working on creating a White Scars Space Marine army, and I'm going to add light brown sand as the base. Can someone help me with what colors and paints to use to get sand / weathered effect on the marines/vehicles?

Trying to wrap my mind around what you are asking. Are you talking about having the models look like the sand has blown the paint off their armor?

If so I would use the hairspray technique but use aluminum/ steel instead of rust brown under the paint job.

Sorry, I just mean like sand build up on their armor. As like a dusty coat on their feet / armor edges / etc. As in they've been running through the sand things like that.

Your paints are not thin enough. Needs more wash.

Use pigment powder

base with sand as normal to build texture/paint as normal.

then dust on pigment powder on the base and a bit on the legs. lock it with isopropanal then varnish to protect.

edited for brain farts.

If you're in a hurry you could just try drybrushing or stippling the sand colour very lightly on to the model around the feet/lower leg area. Try it on a practice model or bit of sprue first, though.

You can check the bottom of this article as well: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Dakka_Modeling_FAQ:_Weathering#How_do_I_weather_a_Marine_miniature%3F

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.
