I recently inherited an Eldar army, and have just picked up the codex, and have a quick question for y'all. The army came with 8 warlocks - would you ever run that many? Or should some of these guys head off to the trade pile? I have no experience whatsoever with Eldar (ok, truth be told, I'm a painter more than a gamer - *none* of my 40K models have fought under my command!!) and am going to a minis swap meet in a week or two - before I'll have a chance to properly read up on these guys.

How many warlocks would you ever run in a 1,000 pt game? 2,000 pt game? Eight? Zero?

Thanks in advance!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

I haven't run 8 since 3rd ed.

2000pts I used to run 5.

Haven't played with my eldar in 4 years, though and just sold 4 of my 13.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

In the new book you can run quite a few, but most people run them on jetbikes as a seer council, not on foot.

In the old codex I ran a maximum of two on foot, because I bought them with/for guardian or wraithguard squads.

Out of curiosity, how effective is the new seer council?

I haven't ever run it.

But from my friends' discussions it still plays basically the way it always has if it's a little weaker overall. The unit hits things and runs away. It doesn't have the damage output for sustained melee; it lacks power weapons and volume of attacks. Warlock powers require psychic tests on LD8 so perils is a danger for key powers like conceal and protect. Fortune, a mainstay of the old way, is no longer guaranteed. Allying with Dark Eldar so you can put the Baron with them helps as it gives them more punch and the hit and run special rule.

I'm running 9 Warlocks with Spears on Jetbikes. 495 points.

I run a max 10 man squad in my fun games. It is pretty fun but more for the squad blowing their own brains out rather than effectiveness. It is also funny as you can't believe how often opponents will put vehicles within 18" of the council. 11 singing spears + guide is nothing to sneer at when vehicles are concerned.

If you like the models I would keep them. One thing I have learned is that time will change what units are great and what units are not so if you keep them long enough they will become great.

There is a method to make them fairly effective; DE allies to run grisly trophies on a vehicle near the unit and run a big squad with farseers and baron. If you get the correct powers the unit can become pretty decent. (fortune+conceal is nice)

I used this unit twice already, and I must admit, it's pretty fun.

10 Warlocks
Fuegan (the more wounds he takes the stronger he gets but actually we can heal him and his bonuses still stay )
Farseer
Baron (optional)

In my future games I'll probably take Shining Spears on at least 5 Warlocks.
