If a Chaos Lord with Blight Grenades joins a unit without them, does the unit gain the benefit of the grenades? I know the independent character rules state that special rules are not conferred to the unit they join, but the grenades are wargear and I can't seem to find and specific rule one way or the other.

You'll have to look at the wording for Assault and Defensive grenades.
Does the effect apply to Models or Units?

I don't have the rulebook handy, but I'm pretty sure it's worded as 'if a unit with defensive grenades is charged...'
So the unit is a whole isn't equiped with them, but equally if one character has the grenades then the unit could be considered to have them?
Surely this must come up with Space Marines with assault grenades joining Guard blobs which don't and the like? How do people play that?

So does that mean that attackers who are attributing attacks to the Lord wouldn't get bonus attacks (due to the grenades) but attacks against other models in the unit would? That makes sense actually.

Assault only benefits the model with them.
Defensive would effect a unit charging.

For precedent, there's a GK FAQ question that says only a single model in the unit needs to have defensive grenades (as well as special-effect grenades, like Rad and Psychotroke).

The wording on defensive grenades is "A unit equipped with defensive grenades has..." and "Models charging units equipped with defensive grenades..."
The wording in the GK codex is "When a unit equipped with..." for their various special grenades.
GK FAQ says:
Q: Does the entire unit need to be equipped with rad, psyk-out and/or
psychotroke grenades for their effects to work or is just one model being
equiped with them enough? (p60)
A: One model in a unit is enough.
--> The whole unit gets the benefit of defensive grenades if just the IC has them.

I'm happy now I can have a unit of terminators with defensive grenades
