A quick question for any American players out there. I know there was allot of variation when it comes to US uniforms in NW Euorpe and it was quite common to see GI’s in Normandy wearing either the Khaki colored short jack or the Olive Green Herringbone one. The Paining Guide in the back of Overlord also suggests that US Trousers also come in either Field Drab or Dark Green.

I’ve done a few test figures to determine which combination I prefer but I was wondering if there was variation within individual units? Could I mix and match the various combinations within a single company? I know lots of gamers like the same scheme for the sake of uniformity, but it be more realistic for GI’s to look more rag tag?

US Paratroopers had a differant color then then rest of the Army. They used the M42 Jumpsuit. After D-Day the Army standardized their uniform so that all units wore the M43 which was a darker shade of green then the M42.

Yes you can mix and match.

If you look at period photos you will see large variation among units, at all levels.

Troops in theatre would have older uniforms, perhaps mixed with new old pattern issued from stocks, or new pattern items issued during R&R. New replacements could be in new or old pattern clothing, freshly issued.

Really, uniformity is something that exists in wargamers heads... Soldiers work their uniforms into what works and is comfortable for them and thus you get a great deal of personal variation. Especially amongst veteran or long serving units as they develop their 'look' to suit their needs.

Add to that colour variation from dyes and light fading and you can mix in lots of subtle variation.
