I'm back from a long absence and haven't even looked at 6th edition rules yet. I'm looking to build a semi-competative army. New Tau and grey knights look good. What armies should I currently avoid like the plague?

Armies that can deal with anything you might see on the field at the moment are Necrons, Tau, Eldar. They are mostly shooting armies. I would say the only army at the moment that is decent in assault seems to be Chaos Daemons.
However, you can play most armies "semi-competitive", and unless you want to play in tourneys just pick whichever you like.

Well, Sisters are pretty expensive to collect, and sadly BA assault is not particularly competitive in 6th. Which is a bummer because I love my Blood Angels and their face-stabbings.
