Hey all, recently i was rereading the battle of the fang novel by Chris Wraight and at the end it talks a Lone Wolf. Well that got me wondering about this "rank" within the Wolves chapter. Im not very well versed about this position, ive only read Blood of Asaheim, Battle of the Fang, Prospero Burns, and 1k Sons.... other than that idk much about the Wolves. So this is my question, what is a lone wolf? More specifically how do they function within the wider chapter? Do the continue to serve in the same Great Company that their former pack was in, just now as a one man squad? Sort of running around killing at will? Or do they go out on some quest of revenge away from the chapter by themselvesin the hopes of avenging their brothers deaths? I sort of viewed it as the former where they continue to live and train in the Fang and being deployed alonside the other packs of their GC killing on their own. But i realized i had nothing to actually support that view other than my own assumption, so does anyone know? Shed some light on this for me? Thanks

A Lone Wolf is the last survivor of a pack(Blood Claw or Greyhunter) and vowed to take revenge for his fallen brothers by slaying a mighty Enemy or die trying.

The special thing is, Lone Wolfs have access to the complete armory of the chapter and get anything they need to fullfill their vow (Like TDA and Stormshields)

Quote taken from the Lexicanum site:

Unlike other Space Marine chapters who reinforce their squads, the Space Wolves do not reinforce their wolf packs when casualties occur and for this reason the Long Fangs and Grey Hunters operate at a reduced strength. Even the most experienced packs will sometimes suffer such a great loss that only one survivor remains from the pack. This sole survivor has no pack, no kin, no rank, nothing left in the Universe but to seek revenge for his fallen brothers.

These survivors are known as Lone Wolves and will swear an oath to avenge the honour of their brethren. As the final stage of his oath nears completion, a Lone Wolf vows to hunt down and slay the fiercest foe, all in the name of his fallen wolf pack. Once the Lone Wolf has taken the oath, he then prepares himself for the ensuing battle, both mentally and physically, rejecting any company from others.

On the eve of battle, it is often a sight of great awe as Lone Wolves advance on the enemy, their gazed fixed upon a single target that they will stop at nothing to slaughter. Many Lone Wolves do not fulfill their own self-prophecy and are inevitably slain in the process, being rejoined with their fallen wolf pack with a fine tale to tell. Rarely though, a Lone Wolf will return victorious in the hunt, carrying the head of the fallen enemy back to his commander in the Great Company. These unique individuals are almost certainly inducted into the Wolf Guard at the request of the Wolf Lord that they serve, for such a feat to succeed is no small accomplishment indeed.

Ferocious Blood Claw

Fenris

The lone wolf is the last surviving member of his squad, often bearing a vengeful intent. The fang will give him pretty much anything he wants if he cries hard enough, and then he'll go headfirst charging into a daemon horde and die. So basically, they have a death-wish, and it becomes a mission in itself to recover to war gear the inevitably lost when they died. So lone wolves are pains in the asses, and they are the reason that the imperium is losing technology, because they keep dying and giving it away.

^ If he takes down a big target...Who gives a damn about equipment...If he dies...well yeah

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."

Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Half the fun is the Back Story:
Maulkorb [Muzzle] and Blitz [Lone Wolf Brothers]
Muzzle and Blitz as they have been named or the years are a competitive set of twins. They competed for everything as they grew up. They competed for who could higher, run faster throw farther and as they grew older kill more. This developed into a trait of trophy collecting, everything from teeth, ears heads and even fingers.
One day something crawled out of the sea and attacked there village, the both of them picked up sword and shield and charged forward to be the fist one to lay a blow and then it was who could kill it. The both of them were drug under the water never to bee seen by there village again.
They both woke up in an infirmary on Asaheim. Here there completive streak was once more invoked as they almost got into a fight over who was the closest to death. The Iron Priest and the Wolf Priest looking over them then looked over at each other at the same time and said Ragnar at the same time.
There fights during there initiation rights almost became legendary. They would get into fight over things like who cleaned there weapon first, who could be the first one selected for the next phase of training. Once there fighting got so bad the Lukas had to beat them both unconscious just to get some quiet and then they fought over he when unconscious fist. The Test of Morkai did not help much, one was the first back, but the other had made a large kill.
As Blood Claws they excelled in close combat, they spent time as Skyclaws and as Swiftclaws. They did have the habit if left unsupervised on the battle field to go out with there Blood Claw Pack and go on unauthorized “Field Trips” behind enemy lines looking for “Trophies”.
It was decided early on that when they finished there time as Blood Claws that they were going to the Wolf Scouts. This suited them fine as it gave them opportunity to go on “Trophy Hunts”. This did however focus their energies in a positive direction. Their Wolf Guard Pack Leader convinced them that if they documented their “Trophy Hunts” that they could get more glory and honor over it. They may have gone out more than once on a hunt only to come back with invaluable information.
The fate came in. during the “Eye of Terror” Campaign there scout pack got isolated behind enemy lines. As they continued there gorilla war the pack was slowly shrinking, eventually it was just the two of them.
When they would run low on supplies and they would just get more from the enemy. If a piece of equipment broke they would just replace it from one of their trophy collections. It was this habit that would be there down fall.
They had replaced most of there armor with that of fallen traitor marines and were in an enemy camp looking for some supplies when they spotted a Traitor Marine Capitan. They jumped him with all of their might and slew him, but both of them lost there weapons in the struggle. They grabbed the nearest weapons, a pair of Power Swords from the weapons rack nearby and got out of there. The swords turned out to be minor demonic weapons, but they did not relies this until years later.
After the campaign they when back to there old ways of fighting and bickering constantly. Nobody noticed the slow change coming over them. Many thought it was the Mark of the Wulfen, but this was a little different. During battle they would start out normal, but by the end of the battle they would both be in a berserk state that could take hours for them to come out of.
One day something happened onboard one of there war ships one of them pulled a knife on his brother. It took both Ragnar and Lukas to pull them apart. There fights had always been with fist, but never with weapons. They were both put in isolation until they returned to Fenris.
On Fenris the Wolf Priest and Iron Priest examined them and then there trophy collections. They found that many of there “Eye of Terror Trophies” had a level of taint to them. Njal was called in.
Njal spent many weeks studding everything and determined a few things. They and their Trophies were tainted with the blood of Khorne. This was the corrupting force behind there escalating violence and would corrupt them eventually. This would also eventually kill them if they if they were separated from them to long.
The two of them for once blamed them selves instead of there brother of their failing. Ulric then stepped in. and ask how long would this corrupting force take to consume them. Njal said about a hundred years or so. Ulric took the two of them to go and cool off on opposite side of Asaheim.
Njal and Ulric consulted with Logan and Ragnar on what to do with them. After many days of discussion the solution was simple let them have the warriors death they deserved. Let them also wear there shame.
It took weeks for the Wolf scouts to find the two of them. They were both found living with packs of wolves. The two of them had found a level of piece in there feral existence, but the chance to die the warriors death also gave them new focus.
Currently they run with the wolves when not at war. In times of war they don their armor, shields and pick up their swords and seek the howl of Morkai.

Talking in Game Context:
They are also Vicious in Combat; I have them with a Close Combat Weapon, Storm Shield and Mark of the Wolfen. I also add two Wolves for each. I have seen them in some games go though a Combat Squad an Assault Phase. They have only lost me one game because Blitz refused to die.
I have had more fun with them even with the changes to 6th. Its fun t watch your opponent decide if he want to fire his Overwatch or not because of the Victory Point.

Talking in Fluff Context:
I just love the concept and I try to come up with a fluffy reason to create one. Currently I want to try one in the Terminator armor with a Chain fist and Wolf Claw. What is holding me up is I like adding the two Fenrisian Wolves, I can’t quite figure out how to justify it Fluff Wise.

The other thing is what to do with your Lone Wolfe who refuses to Die on the Table Top,

Uther Drakswulfen [Dragon-Wolf]
Uther started his Saga as a young man. He was not the strongest or the best warrior of his tribe that called them selves The Sea Dragons. What made him stand out was his sometimes reckless courage. Is during a fight with a small kraken he truly proved this. He leapt onto it with an axe in one hand and grabbed on with the other. This action gave the rest of the tribe time to regroup and slay the creature. However this battle left him mortally wounded. This is when Ulric claimed him.
During The Test of Morkai he was successful, but only barely. He was set upon by a trio of Wulfen as he reached the half way point of his journey. Though grievously injured he managed to defeat them and finish the test.
As a young Blood Claws he also proved a strong inner will once more. In one battle he led the charge vs. a Carnifex that belched flame, nearly wiping out a Imperial Guard Unit. Killing with his Power Axe he was nearly killed once more by its death throws. He returned to the fight just days later this time with the nickname “Dragon-Wolf” given to him by the local Guard unit he saved.
One mission the Thunderhawk he was on took a hit from an Ork fighter sending it crashing in a set of badlands. Climbing from the wreckage there was only him and the remains of 2 Skyclaws Packs and a bunch of Fenrisian Wolves. The first thing he did was to take command of the Skyclaws and then exert dominance over the Fenrisian Wolves. Cutting his way out of Thunderhawk he found themselves in a set of broken badlands. Thinking quickly he grabbed a Power Axe, Plasma Pistol and a Flamer, he and his new Pack donned Jump-Packs and started hunting green skins.
During this time he came across a group of Ork Bikers, Killer Kans and a Death Dred, He quickly organized an assault on the small Mob. One of the Skyclaws and the wolves closed on the bikers wile he and his Pack jumped the Dreads. The bikers were quickly overran and they made short work of the Kans. The Death Dred was much harder to crack. With some work they finally defeated it, this time was different, and Uther came out uninjured. Having depleted their fuel for the Jump Packs, they grabbed the Ork bikes and with a little work got them working. With a Power Axe in one hand he went hunting once more.
Now a Grey Hunter he once more found himself fighting Tyranids. This time it was a Lictor that was his bane, it jumped his Pack and he then leapt upon it with a Power Axe and slew it quickly. This time he only lost his eye.
When the last of his Pack was killed fighting Chaos near the Eye of Terror he became a Lone Wolf. Finding solace with the decedents of the Wolf Pack he had lead years ago. This was the only endeavor he ever failed at. He went to war vs. Chaos, charging anything bigger than him. With a Frost Axe in One hand and a Bolt Pistol in the other he destroyed many a creature of Chaos. At the end of the campaign he was distraught, wondering why he had not joined his brothers. Ulric suggested that maybe he had a greater destiny to fulfill. Ulric Suggested that he go and hunt down a Blackmane. If he killed it with his bear hands, it would prove that he a Legendary Beast Slayer, if he did not survive, he would join his Wolf Brothers.
Uther went on his quest, months later he found a Legendary Blackmane. He tracked it for weeks before pouncing upon it. In a hour long battle they struggled before Uther was victorious. When he returned Logan was there to great him. He asked Uther to join his Personal Wolf Guard. Uther jumped at the chance. Ulric gifted him with a Thunder Hammer, suggesting that he should use it for fighting monsters. Uther did well as a Wolf Guard, but his tendency to charge stuff bigger than him kept getting him mauled.
His days as a Wolf Guard ended when he was asked to lead an assault on a trader Marine stronghold. He once more turned to the pack of Fenrisian Wolves that served him so well in the past. Leading an assault using a Land Raider Crusader he breached the walls and charged a Chaos Dreadnaught. The destruction of the Dreadnaught in one blow was all that was needed at the start of the battle. It was at this time asked Logan to never let him go into battle with out his wolves. Logan jokingly agreed saying “I seems to be the only way to keep you out of the infirmary”.
Currently Logan ask Uther to lead Assaults against Large creatures and Vehicles.
