marines definitely! Unless you want to proxy the dark angels as chaos marines, you definitely need some basic troops. Those twenty cultists aren't gonna cut it for you. So tell me, are you planning on converting or using the dark angels as chaos too? (bikers, librarian, captain, marines, and termies) Or just the original chaos models? (hellbrute, lord, chosen, and cultists)
With some handy converting you could have a 1000pt list in no time. Or if you're not good with that, just buy some more boxes of basic chaos marines. And if you can fit it in your list (and budget) a helldrake.

I did the same thing as you; started with the dark vengeance kit (split $ with my buddy, he plays Dark Angels now). Played a friendly tournament @ 1000pts with that army (added in upgrades) and made it to 3rd place.
Since then I've acquired a box of marines, some plagues, more cultists, three rhinos, two forgefiend/maulerfiends, another helbrute, a heldrake, and more HQs than I can possibly field (DP, Sorc, Biker Lord, Juggernaut Lord, Huron).
And from my experience, the most important thing I can tell you is PROXY BEFORE YOU BUY!
Find a friend or someone at your local FLGS who is willing to let you proxy models to test out different lists, different units, different combinations thereof, and the various HQ choices. The best way you can learn to play, learn what you like to field in your army and your preferred personal playstyle, is to get some hands-on experience with everything your army has to offer. Try fielding a mass of marines; try the various elite units before deciding with finality you don't want to play them; proxy your rhino for some of the other tanks.
Another tip is to read over people's CSM lists on the Army Lists forum. There you can find a wealth of information, loads of different viewpoints on what models and units are and aren't good for, and you can learn the basics of how to build an effective list. What you learn there should help give you insight into what models you want to purchase and field.
All that being said;
More marines is always a good thing! And if you decide to not use the elites, then you'll be able to fit a big pile of 'rines in your list.
Daemon Princes can be worth the cost, sure, but just remember all of their hidden price tags.
DV doesn't give you much long-range fire support. Consider Obliterators or Havocs, and maybe a forgefiend (I love 'em, obviously).
Chaos Terminators. Not only are they the most badass looking terminators in the entire game, but they're among the least expensive point-wise. SUper customizable, super useful, super hard to kill. Maybe not immediately for your 1000pt list, but as you expand your army they're damn handy to keep around, especially if you aren't spending points on elites.

Thanks for all the great advice guys, i really fancy some obliterators and some long range support, my basket of goodies just keeps getting bigger and my wallet ever so smaller.
Hopefully now ill be well on my way to being one with the chaos gods.

Cheap way to make oblits, buy sm black reach or dv termi with power fists, use green stuff to add bulk and mutate other guns on their storm bolters.
