Hi guys I currently own neither of the above but am considering investing in one soon for anti air and for somewhere to keep my chaos Havocs safe. I like the look of the fortress obviously more but does it offer more benefits than an ADL?

it depends on your playstyle. if you sit back and let the enemy come to you, blasting away as they do so, the fortress could be a better option for you, as it can hold several units and has 2 big guns. your army will be unassaultable so long as the entrance section is occupied, and if they blow it up no-one can get in or out, as it becomes impassible and it's the only entrance. you will become more vulnerable to flamers, burnas and probably templates, as you'll be bunched up on top of the battlements. it'll also hive you a better vantage point, as i believe the top of the tower is around 14" tall. it's also very useful for hiding an objective, as it will block line of sight for anything but a point-blank monolith.

If you charge at the enemy, holding them back while your havocs just want some cover and a quad-gun, the aegis is for you, as it's much cheaper (more points for holding the enemy back) offers an exceptional cover save if you go to ground (and if you're firing at fliers, your big guns will be snapshooting anyway! lootas trick, that is!) and can cover a lot of army if the opponent gets the first turn. conversely, it won't block lie of sight, it won't boost your firing position and has less gun.

hope this helps!

I'm slowly building an all out attack khorne themed army with khorne daemons as allies. Except for auto cannon havocs everything else is to be assaulting. Have considered not bothering at all with air defence but just literally added Havocs to my collection so it seems like next obvious step. My last game I slammed a bloodthirster forward and deepstriked 2x 10 bloodletters and 10 combi melta terminators with a lord with axe of blind fury to great effect.

Excellent response BTW thanks.

Are you thinking about the Fortress or Bastion?

I ask because the Fortress is much more expensive and typically is the keystone unit in your army while a Bastion is easier to drop into an existing list.

I was thinking of the big fortress of redemption more on looks than anything as the bastion really isn't something I'd consider at all.

I'm not a huge fan of the fortress for my army, which is a Khorne Night Lords army. I don't think that it solves any real anti-air shooting and is a heck of a lot of points.
If you're set on getting one or the other, I would say ADL since it's awesome with bloodletters at bs 5.
But i also have a crush on the FoR model and have proxied it for 2 games.

If you just need the anti-air firepower, an aegis seems like the better choice as it will cost you far less than a fortress while still giving you the gun you want.

The key to being able to enjoy the game in real life and also be a member of this online community is to know where you draw the line. What someone online on the other side of the world that you've never met says should never deter you from taking a unit for being either weak or OP. The community is a great place to come for tactics advice, and there is a lot of very sound opinions and idea out there, but at the end of the day, play the game how you want to... Don't worry about the hordes of Dakka descending on your gaming club to arrest you for taking one heldrake or not using a screamerstar. Knowing the standard opinion (and that's all it is) on what is good/bad and conforming to that opinion religiously are two entirely separate things.
