I know that this pretty much depends on my gaming group, but I wanted to obtain a general opinion concerning my latest idea. I'm still relatively new to the game, I'm a troll player, and I've really only been focused on the hobby aspect of the game at the moment (just painting away). What got me into this faction was the classic Mauler. I simply love the thing, and the plastic "kit" version fails to impress IMO. At some point, I want to get a hold of a earthborn, and while I do like the model, it doesn't necessarily cause me to swoon either. On the other hand, I find the extreme mauler to be very appealing as well, thus my question....

Would it be a faux pas to proxy an extreme mauler as a earthborn?

part 2: Like I said earlier, I'm really focusing on the hobby aspect of the game. In fact, I might be playing my first game this weekend, despite having some models for months now. Here's my conundrum. I want to paint up a swamp troll, mostly because he seems to match up with my idea of what the Hunter's Grim should be (imagine early Disney swamp villians/Aristocats/etc). I know these guys aren't "bad guys", but I do envision Grim and his cronies having a Cajun accent. That aside, I think the Swampy would fit right in with my warped perspective. Here's my question though...is he a complete dud in the game? I've been lurking in various forums, and there really isn't much on this guy. I just wanted to see what you guys felt in regard to this rotund fellow.

Part 1: It would be kinda faux pas to proxy long term, but I doubt anyone would give you any gripe in the short term.

Part 2: The Swamp Troll is actually fairly decent. I forget what all he does.

I'm from the future. The future of space

People always talk about how proxies aren't good on the internet, but then play with them just fine in person. I don't think anyone is really going to have a problem as long as you are very clear up front. Even Tournament Organizers will likely be sympathetic to a extreme troll painted up as an earthborn.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

PP still sells the old metal dire troll mauler as a webstore exclusive. If you go for an extreme sculpt you might want to get yourself a metal mauler as well.

At a tournament it all comes down to this. Can your opponent tell what the model is supposed to be? If the answer is yes you're 99% there.

In a friendly game, who cares, proxy all you want, Its a great way to get a feel for a new unit without dropping the cash first. If the person you are playing against has an issue, play someone else, chances are it wont be a fun game with someone that has that kind of attitude.

People who are uptight about this kinda thing really need to chill,

The biggest difference is the paintjob.

You could use the extreme mauler to represent an EBDT if it was painted like an earthborn and you were consistent.

I'd have no problem with it.

You'll want the correct stat card though.

i have a metal mauler and atleast in his stock position i despise him. His fist is always in the way, and since he doesnt have reach its actually an issue. I wouldnt advise getting it unless you are good with cutting/greenstuffing metal casts so you can at least move his arm to the side about an inch.

Back on the proxy

If theyre cool with proxies at all, anything of the proper size would work. Ive used my metal dire troll mauler as both a bomber and an earthborn before i got the real deal, even though he's CLEARLY not either of them lol. Some people depending on how cool you are with them will allow some pretty crazy proxies - my friends in 40k when i first started told me to try an ork wagon list, but i had no battlewagons. So i used 3 shoes LOL

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

With the metal mauler, just turn him so the enemy is seeing his butt when in combat. Most, if not all players will understand and know the actual facing. Certain models just don't like to have other models near them (looking at you Mammoth).

With Trolls and Skorne you must master the skill of butt-charging.
