Hello folks. I am trying to put together a merc highborn army with Durgen madhammer at the helm. I just placed a big order over at miniature market for the warcasters and all the solos but I wanted the community's opinion on infantry choices. Here is the 25 pt list that I am planning on using Minus the infantry block that will be the target for primed.

Durgen
-Driller
-Reinholdt

Thor
-Gunner

Master Gunner Dougal Mcnaile

Harlan Versh/Gorman Di Wolfe

Max Forgeguard

What I was going for would be a good target for Primed and I was going between either Sam Machorne and the Devil Dogs or the steelhead infantry.

Steelheads have the obvious bonus of having reach and other things like CMA, set defense etc. However, I felt as though reach is not as much of a benefit in this situation since I would want the models to get within an inch of my opponent so that they get hit by the primed explosion.

Devil dogs on the other hand have a more toolbox feel to them. They can KD jacks and beasts and then gain bonus damage against KD targets. They also have a very short but very high power gun.

Go with steelheads unless you have a good use for Samantha's jack marshal and very good drive.
Reach and set defense are strong advantages over devil dogs, even though the dogs have short-ranged guns. The rest of their abilities are mostly a wash.

The problem I have with the steelheads really comes up when I have to face off against enemy targets that also have reach. In a matchup such as that, the enemy target could simply walk an inch away from me and be outside the primed blast, which would effectively negate half the point to the ability.

With a devil dogs unit, they cant get far enough away to avoid the blast without suffering a free strike.

You can mitigate that by engaging multiple enemies and locking them in place by having them on the fringes of two reach models. engaging enemies one-for-one is ignoring one of the benefits of a reach unit.

I would go with the Devil Dogs. The ability to literally rip warjacks to pieces in a turn is a big advantage.
