What's your local Meta. Personally cultists die quick Even if zombiefied, also I would drop the vindicator in favor of a Las pred and give your plague champs a power weapon w/ GoM

The cultists are purely a meatshield for typhus. I can drop the plas pistols on the champions for gom. I have no idea what the meta is like unfortunately. I see a lot of forgefiends and defilers. I've played a few games with friends using the vindi and its been really good to me.

With the zombies attached to typhus he gets wounded on toughness 3 instead of his T5. Might work. What armies are at your local shop, sounds like a good quantity of armor w/ the oblits 2Melta 2plasma and the vindicator you should do alright.

I see a lot of space wolves, DA , and black legion csm. Then there's the xenos minority. Why would typhus get wounded on T3 for being with the cultists? (I'm pretty new to 40k in general.)

majority toughness of the cultists lets typhus be wounded versus based on the cultists toughness of 3 not typhus's toughness of 5.

I'm assuming you're taking the plasma pistols to enable you to charge? Tips from my experience; for CC don't forget poison re-roll to wound vs T4 or lower models! And Blight Grenades are win, make sure you know what they're capable of.

And I'd recommend dropping the bolter and havoc launcher on the Vindi in the interest of getting some toys on the bikes (flamers are cheap and effective anti-infantry, melta is the best AV buster and I don't expect you're DSing your oblits, are you? Alternatively another plasma on a PM squad). Vindi is already going to destroy anything you point it at.

The rule they're talking about in regards to toughness is on p.14 of the main rulebook. As long as you don't keep typhus at the front it shouldn't be much of an issue. Just remember that due to zombie's Slow and Purposeful, they aren't getting anywhere quick. And you generally want Typhus in CC.

If nobody else is gonna do it I guess I'll have to:

WHY YOU NO TAKE HELDRAKES?

As troll-ey as that sounds, in all seriousness they are amazing.

Note to the reader: my username is not arrogance. No, my name is taken from the most excellent of commanders: Lord Castellan Creed, of the Imperial Guar- I mean Astra Militarum - who has a special rule known only as "Tactical Genius"... Although nowhere near as awesome as before, it now allows some cool stuff for the Guar- Astra Militarum - player. FEAR ME AND MY TWO WARLORD TRAITS.

If he trying for a fluff army the Death Guard wouldn't use Drake's, foot slogging and all.

I'm going to try and respond to everyone without doing a massive quote.
First and foremost, i'll let you guys know what happened at my flgs that day.

Met some people who were very welcoming and invited me to a 2v2 (IG&tau vs csm and tyranids. we let both parties be battle brothers since tyranids technically cant ally with anyone.(
I wound up taking a heldrake and second csm lord(Mon + other upgrades.)) to get 1500 points (apparently 1200 was just silly of me ). We played the "relic" mission. The helldrake totally softened up a warlord unit+other and led to the eventual victory while plague zombies and plague marines meatshielded/marched forwards to let the 'gaunts bring the relic home. in fewer words, The game was looking very bad for us until the 'drake came in. ( My plague marines have NOT been living up to fluff expectations, the rhinos get exploded and the pms don't last very long either.)

Tactical_genius: ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. They are 3ft of zoom domination. My only problem is that I want a truly fluffy deathguard army outside of tournaments.

Tactical_genius / KU'GATH :How can I re-create heldrake-similar efficiency without taking it and staying true to the fluff? ( I realize this may not be possible and if so then I will deal with it.)

Laughingcarp: No dsing oblits. I only WISH I was that ballsy, I dream of doing that effectively. I'll drop the havoc on the vindicator for sure, not much use when its main attraction doesn't allow for other weapons to be fired as I've learned.
My purpose with Typhus is to try and march him up the table like a bamf whether competitive or not. I figure I'll keep him in the (rear of the) unit of zombies and use "lookout sir!" and such. Then disconnect him from the unit and pillage wherever necessary. I really don't wan't to spend the points on a land raider but if it means staying both fluffy and competitive I'll Deathshroud / LR it to get him up in the enemies sh**. If I do take typhus in a land raider with deathshrouds, should I use typhus' daemon/force weapon against decent troops for Monstrous Creatures?

No outside of taking the Drake you will not find it's level of efficiency, while sticking to the fluff
