Subject: Is this Guard list awful? 1500pts

I played this guard list today against an ork list and got hammered. I was doing very well at first but once the orks reached my lines my army fell apart. His list consisted of a deathstar Nobz mob with a KFF Mek and a painboy in a battlewagon and lots of trukk boys. This was supported by lootaz, objective grabbing Grotz and kanz. On a paper I thought my list was ok and I don't think I played too badly. Is there anything I can do to salvage this list or should I just go back to the drawing board? I'd like it to be semi-competitive.

How do you use the list you are using just now ie game plan ? This will help to configure a list into your play style.

Hi maverick,
This was only my first game with guard but the game plan worked/failed like this. The big blob acts as solid fire base, especially when I can order the autocannons to be twin linked. They then advance late game to grab home objectives and rapid fire weaker units. The missile pcs and medusa stick with this.
The russes and chimeras advance slowly firing with the russes screening the transports. This was very effective against the lootas and kans but cc eventually did for the russes, vets and ccs.
Al'harem's platoon fills gaps and threatens enemy backfield objectives/goes for linebreaker.
Marbo is just there for fun!

Looking at the list there are a few points to start with. First one drop the company standard, astropath, all vox and grenade launchers. This will save 65 points find 5 more and you can get an aegis with comms relay adds some defence for a gun line and comm relay lets you re roll reserve roll's. The aegis is great for guard tanks/ artillery to hide behind to get a cover save for then adding in camo net's makes them even better. Second point guard are not great for getting into close combat so moving up to meet orks is not advised where as a gun line would stand a better chance. Third a think a manticore rather than a demolisher would be better as its good for horde and taking out vehicles. Fourth I think more units with fewer models would be better as there are more target priority's as if a unit loses a commissar there are going to fold.

That is great advice, thank you! I'd thought of using an ADL but didn't realise you could add a comms relay which, to me, seems as good as the astropath given it is 10pts cheaper.
I'll also try breaking my big blob in half like you say. The loss of the commissar cost it me in this game.
And yes, i see your point about advancing. May work better against another opponent though

With guard close combat doesn't really go well unless you have a squad kitted out for it or use ogryns as they are better than normal guard for it. Another option instead of al'rahems platoon is to take a veteran squad with harker and give it forward sentries. Means this squad have a 2+ cover in ruins and can infiltrate, then giving them snipers and autocannon makes them a problematic unit for kill unless you can strip there cover and what shooting they can put out.
