In a conversation with my father the subject of casting with Epoxies like Resin came up, and he mentioned that you can buy flooring Epoxy in huge quantities for a low priece.

So far I thought that using something other than special modelling mixes would lead to problems, like loss of detail etc, cause of the viscosity, but according to him "The stuff is so liquid that our worst problem is keeping it were it's supposed to be".

Has anybody had any experience with the stuff? What's your opinion?

It will not work like resin for sure.

It will either be extremely stiff, or mushy and soft. If it was suitable for making models, you would see a lot more of it happening. Fast curing resins are just better in every way.

I have lots of years working with epoxies and polyurethanes when it comes to flooring (and other infrastructure). Epoxies for that market tend to get brittle and don't last long. They remain popular however because they are cheap.

There are a lot of grades of viscosity in resins....you want something with an exceptionally low viscosity for casting things.

For good details you want something below 100cps (centipoise) which I have a feeling this floor stuff is not.

I've used the smooth cast 300, and I quite liked it. It does have a short mix time and a cure time of about 15 minutes if i recall correctly, if you want alittle extra work time, look for the 325.. Or was it 315. not sure, but its one of the two

Do some research about the different properties of resin (viscosity, setting time, the difference between tin cure and platinum cure, etc.).

I have tried several, and personally I like either the smooth cast 305 or aeromarine.

Resin addict is a really good place to check as well.
