Just wanted to let the Dakkadakka Community know that I recently created a website that is an (I think ) easy way to find a 40k tournament near you. I have over 100 events listed. It uses Google Maps to do most of the heavy lifting.

Here is a link...

Events of War

and if it seems too confusing here is how it works.

Events of War About

Always open to suggestions, within my technical abilities.

And if I missed an event just PM I can have it added.

This is pretty damn useful. Two things that pop up to mind;

1) Tournament Necromancy - how will this deal with events that are no longer applicable? (i.e. have already happened).
2) One time events over taking new ones? Say you have a tourney listed at Location A for Date X. How will this handle a tourney at Location A for Date Y?

0000 - Rest Period - BUT YOU BETTER NOT SPEND FOUR WHOLE HOURS SLEEPING. IF YOU DO YOU ARE NOT ANGRY ENOUGH AND TOMORROW YOU GET THE FIRST CHANCE TO PLAY PIN THE TAU ON THE CARNIFEX.

Tournament Necromancy is the biggest problem I can go in by hand and "delist" them, but a lot of events repeat every year or are monthly so it makes it much harder. I just need to think of a creative solution.
I am not sure I follow. Are you talking about multi-day events or one-day events? Or you talking about a filter maybe for location say like escalation tournament? where it happens same place every month?

This is a pretty sweet thing.

Also it looks like you're only listing 2013 events for now but since that year's almost over maybe Frontline's Las Vegas Open in Feb '14 should be added. And the GT at ComiKaze in November this year.

A one-day event that happens at the same place every month (ie FLGS tourneys). Not sure how the system would handle a new entry at the same map location.

It would create another pin over the next one and be really annoying. That is where the Necromancy becomes a problem. Then there is the ever present problem of two stores in the same town having events, you will be forced to zoom in a lot.

One solution to the multiple events in similar locations would be to have a sidebar listing titles of all the pins currently on the map. Then you could pick from that sidebar and it would highlight the pin as if you'd chosen it directly.

Currently, I think the preview box for the selected pin is too big, so replacing that area with a sidebar would be a more effective use of the space.

I'm not just complaining, I really like the concept and appreciate the effort you've put into it.

What about consolidating all the events that go on at a single location into one pin?

Like for Game Empire you could just stick the whole tourney calendar under one pin. Ditto for the pair of events at the LA Convention Center.

Making the Preview box smaller sounds like a good idea that shouldn't be too hard to change. I think someone has a good suggestion for the same location problem.

This is an awesome resource. I have been hunting through individual stores websites for RTT and GT in my area and this kind of consolidation is just what I was looking for. Great Work!

I too am a fan. Ayup. Finding a way for it to deactivate past events automagically would be radical.

What language is the site written in? This could be easily accomplished with a high level data structure (Ruby on Rails, Redis, MongoDB). PM me if you want some help implementing it.

Eclipseoto is PHP since it is wordpress based and if you can think of a solution PM me.

I am thinking of another idea, because I kinda want to keep necro events for a record. I could set a filter to have active events and past events. That way people can look at old information if they need to and also keep the website uncluttered with map pins.

What do you all think?

If I was vain I would list stuff to make me sound good here. I decline. It's just a game after all.
