I've been out of 40k for quite some time, and I've been playing a few other games the past few years instead (Warmachine, Netrunner, et al).

However, I've recently moved to the Cleveland area and it has a rich 40k scene. I dusted off my Tau models (I had a pretty good army a few years back!) and I want to play again.

It's just been so long, however, and I've forgotten a lot of the tactics that served me well.

I'm in dire need of a brush-up with the ol' boys. Have you any basic tips, tutorials, or tricks that I should be aware of in the new edition and the new codex?

Head over to advancedtautactica.com. They have the best introductory primers for Tau that I've seen.

Step 1: Place models on table
Step 2: Get first turn
Step 3: Watch opponent take off models
Step 4: Shake Hands for a quick and boring win.

I changed the steps above for players like himself

Step 1: Place models on table
Step 2: Get first turn
Step 3: lose due to being outplayed/playing an outdated codex
Step 4: cry for lack of adapability

are you going to keep talking about it, or do something already?

Adapt the BA or BT codex against Tau or Eldar. Please, I'd love to see it.

It's a good thing that you have forgotten old tactics, since the new Codex is fundamentally different in many ways. Basically, Tau are now an infantry/battlesuit army which can put out awesome amount of dakka. Markerlights are plentiful and more effective than previously, there are HQ's and abilities which multiply your Pulse fire. Tau Overwatch can be actually terrifying and completely wipe out assaulting unit, instead of killing 1-2 guys if lucky. By contrast, Tau vehicles aren't that great anymore. Also Broadsides no longer carry Railguns, so S10 spam is no longer in the agenda.

Against many armies, Tau can be frighteningly effective, so better prepare for complaints about cheese, overpowered, gamebreaking, bandwagoning etc. As can be witnessed in this very thread.

Mr Vetock, give back my Multi-tracker!

Outdated codex? They are one of the newer codecies how are they outdated. I'm guessing due to the link in your sig you didn't know that they have been updated.

The comprehension levels, oh the humanity.

If I made an error please correct me as I'm fine to admit if I misunderstood him. Rather than making such a comment.

Edit: Ahh I think I see what you mean. I just re read it and realised that he was saying what happens when you go up against Tau. My mistake.

If we could endeavour to make our posts a tad less condescending it'd be better.

Thanks.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

That was perhaps a overly high dosage of snark, my apologies.

The main things that have changed for the tau are markerlight usage and crisis loadouts.

The marker rules can be found in the new dex, be sure to memorise them.

Crisis suits can now take multiples of the same weapon, as per the faq found here :http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3170231a_Tau_Empire_v1.0_APRIL13.pdf
(Whilst there be sure to check over the brb faq too)

In light of this crisis teams can have a much more defined role, its rarely worth mixing and matching weapons now.

Tau have lots of shiny toys in their wargear, dont go overboard its very easy to spend too much on bling and end up with too few guns. The exception to this being the enforcer armour, if you are taking a commander as your warlord buy this. Almost no exceptions.

Rail rifle broadsides got hit pretty hard with the nerf stick, a search should yield more results but it may be worth switching to missilesides if you arent running mech tau.

Hope thats some help.
