So I got to post 116 and thought "eh, why not make post 117 special" So I'm asking you, Dakka, What do you guys think about the video game series Halo?
To be honost, Halo is one of the games that got me into video gaming, so I have some fond memories of it myself.
It's Call of Duty in Space. Main difference: Halo has an over-arching story line that focuses on characters whereas Call of Duty focusses on a movie experience.
Halo - November 15, 2001
Call of Duty - October 29, 2003
So technically, CoD is Halo on Earth.

I can’t stand Halo the colors of the environment and landscape (Mostly purple and very bright) throw me off. I do not like the fact you can pretty much glide when you jump. You can no aim unless the gun has a scope of some sort. I have only played the older games an to ME, the are no fun. Online is worse you have to find the guns you want to use and most people just camp on them. It ok if your drunk and have a bunch of buddies over and want to play. COD and MWF are more of a sit down and think about what you’re going to do. My 0.02 cents in the hat.

Personally, I'm not entirely sure what the big fuss is. It's nice but as mentioned before, I don't like the 'floatiness' of how the jumping works. The story did not seem terribly exciting to me as well.
I think the main reason why it got so popular is because of the whole dorm room experience where you could have four guys sitting on a couch, yelling and screaming at each other as they play. Sort of like why Goldeneye was so popular.
Massively overrated, dinosaur controls and playability, good universe is all its.got going for it anymore, it.suffers the same issue cod does, other games have innovated and surpassed it.
Halo is special to me because it shows the value of having various distinct enemies each with differing strategies with which to defeat them. Halo was the first game where i really considered the order in which i defeated enemies. It is also the only game series where the 2 weapon limit has not felt arbitrary and limiting, although i cannot explain why.
It also (for the most part) introduced vehicles to the FPS game in a way that made them both effective and balanced. BTW, i'm not saying it was the first to have vehicles i just like the way you can do the (vehicle friendly) story levels either with vehicles or without them (accept in H3, which i why i dislike it's story mode).
I can take or leave the story, although i really like all the cutscenes in the first 2 games, if not the plot.
The jump in Halo is bad i'll agree, why does a guy with a fairly slow walk jump like Mario? However the jumps have always been satisfying for some reason.

ODST was nothing special but it had its own little story and characters, however not having an online firefight mode
was pretty disappointing.
Reach was a step back imo, I cared more about the jar-heads in ODST than I did about your squad in reach. Also I don’t get why we can no longer duel wield weapons? We could in 2 and 3 and it was awesome.
#4 was a little disappointing (seriously a quick time event in the first 5 minutes "press X not to die" wtf? All these “New” guns are human weapons with an alien skin wtf? Why does this game feel so linear? Why are the new baddies so lame?) Also #4 did nothing innovative.
If I hazarded a guess DW went away cause to many people who couldn't throw a grenade worth a damn got killed one to many times by the SMG/PR combo and dual Maulers.

My favorite part of any Halo game was the random spaceship flying segment in Reach. Not really knocking the game, just saying FPS isn't my favorite genre.
Although I played the heck out of The Silent Cartographer level in the original because it was included in the PC demo. I played that one level enough back when I was younger that it's layout is pretty much burned into my brain. Got it down to a science by the end. I always enjoyed killing the 2 hunters with only a pistol and melee attacks, then going through the second half of the level stealth style without anybody even noticing me.

It was fun for the first two games. Then it basically became CoD, in that they just kept making a repeat of the same game over and over with little innovation.
Why people are rabid about the series to this day I have no idea. It pretty much has become sci fi CoD
“Sometimes I can hear my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I'm not living.”
VARY bland. I personally feel, that for all the "action" thats supposed to be in those games, it still comes off as boring and lazy. I hate how I cant really aim anything Im shooting. To me, thats just a very lazy way to do a FPS.
Halo did a lot of things first and it did them well. I think it's neither over nor underrated. It's rated right where it belongs. Very good, well designed shooting gameplay with good settings and a nice tone.
Visually, the first Halo influenced quite a few games that came after it. Mass Effect in particular drew quite a bit from Halo 1.
Now, plenty of games have come later and kept innovating where halo eventually stopped, but the halo games don't get magically bad because of it. All of them are still quite playable and well put together.
I will never forgive them for remaking the original and not allowing us to do the original game's multiplayer online. The Original Halo's multiplayer was some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game.
I only played the first 3. First was great, had an awesome story and other than the abomination that was Library I enjoyed almost everything in that game. It also had some of the best music in the series (seriously why has nobody mentioned that yet?)
2 was pretty good, but kind of forgettable. Some parts, like where you fought the scarab were cool though. Was not a fan of having to play as the Arbiter so much though.
Number 3 was a lot of fun as well, but I never felt compelled to keep playing. I felt like Chief's story should have ended there.
Thought about picking up ODST and Reach when they get cheaper, but I'm in no hurry there.
Also, what's up with people complaining about not being able to aim? You can aim just fine. If you're talking about looking down sights, not all games have to be CoD/BF3. Its explained in the story that he has the optics wired into his suit, which shows the reticule on his HUD. As long as that works he has no need to look down the sights. What you see on your screen is what he sees.

It was the best game available for my LAN parties of my teenage years. Halo one was a fantastic experience when played with about 16 friends. Infinite grenades, shotguns, and capture the flag meant some of the best birthday parties ever.
Overrated. Can't stand most of the fan base either.

I'm a fan of the series and yeah. The fan base (especially in Halo 2 when I feel it was at its worst) is rarely pleasant. You need to go into a MOBA or Null-Sec Space to find a greater hive of douchery.
Love the setting, and the story. Kind of going off it in the sense that it's getting a bit out there in terms of plot. I kind of just liked it as one super soldier against the universe. Forerunner vs human war in the past does nothing for me.
I very much enjoy playing through Halo's campaigns. Halo 4 has been my least favourite campaign on initial play through, i think it was the lack of proper music. I hope they get the music right for 5.

It's pretty slick.
(it's Diamond Droog but you get an exalt anyways!)
I kinda think reach was the best in gameplay. I loved the custimization for fire fights, and I think the Elites have some of the best enemy AI I have seen in most games.
Also, I still have fun with a firefight map with Nothing But Elites
Greg Bear is trying to make it grimdark. Halo fans are convinced it's grimdark. I lol at that. So, the Forerunners got dicked over by a biological lifeform? Welcome to 40k 101. Granted Forerunner tech is pretty crazy.
That's what I think of the universe. I don't keep up with the games - as a member of the PC Master Race, I refuse to play any Halos past 1.
It's pretty grim...
The Spartan 3's are 12 year old children recruited for the express purpose of being cut price super soldiers sent on suicide missions. Not missions where the chance of detah is high. Missions where death is certain.
