I'm not an employee at this FLGS. I just come here sometimes to play a game or two with a buddy. I don't know everything there is to know about all the games in this shop. No, these figures don't come prepainted. Yes, I painted them myself, and yes, I do have a lot of models. Is it an expensive hobby? Yes, but it's cheaper than getting hooked on hard drugs. Yes, I'm using a lotta dice. Yes, the rulebook is that thick, and no, the type isn't huge, actually it's tiny. Why am I so grumpy? Am I losing the game? No, it's just that there are employees in this shop that are PAID to help people shop, so I'd love it if you and all you kind would please go to them first instead of interrupting me while I'm in the middle of a game. Thank you. Have a nice day.

Seriously, it takes VERY LITTLE to engage someone else in a store in a friendly and polite way, especially if they're just trying to learn about the game you're playing. Unless you were playing for your mortgage payment or to cure a life threatening illness, there's no reason to, for lack of a better phrase, "be the stereotype."

I think you'd get more of what you want by printing this out on a 3' square foam-core board, and setting it against the end of the table at which you are playing.
You'd probably get a lot of laughs, and nobody bothering you.

I wouldn't mind if this only happened once in a while, but this happens every time I go to my FLGS. It's usually accompanied by the grubby children manhandling my overpriced toys. I mean, when there are really excellent, friendly staff around, why interrupt someone that's obviously in the middle of something.
Obviously I try my best to be friendly when this happens, but on the inside I'm grinding my teeth, especially if they start asking me about games I know nothing about and have never played.

Agreed. I have people come in all the time looking at 40k stuff while I'm playing or cleaning up another game. I notice the owner is busy and say, "hey if you've got any questions just ask. Most of us play all of the games here and can answer any questions you might have."

Hey guys, can you just forget I ever posted this (in retrospect) really crappy excuse for a rant. I really should have read it over before I posted. I came off as way PO'ed, when in reality I'm just slightly amused when this happens, and do try to help these people out. I was trying to be funny, and I have, judging by these comments, obviously failed really badly. Guess I won't be doing that again.
I'm just gonna go die of embarrassment in the corner now.

No worries then; I was actually surprised to see this from you in the first place.
I think the tone just got mixed up when you translated it to written form.

Yeah, it sounded a heck of a lot better in my head. Then I reread it and did a massive spit-take of shame. Gak.
I think I won't be posting for a while now.

You see the great games workshop, saves you from this.
No gaming in store, to be disturbed.
staff grab mom and fasten in corner while emptying pockets/credit card of money.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

Takes a strong person to admit a mistake, well done.
The more young crazy kids the better I say, I have two... trying to make sure they do not force strangers to kill them when they "handle extremely expensive toys" without permission.
The moms are a necessity in order to bring more players in the world, find your amusement where you can (even better if they are good looking...).
VERY few women play the hobby and any willing to ask, should be greeted politely because I LOVE getting a hold of them before the sales guy in any store does.
You get to tell them all the best ways to get bang for the buck and say what the guy is about to suggest is garbage... hate seeing women with the kids looked at as a purse with legs.
Make us proud with the next confused mom with insane kid in tow!

This, times a million. And not just for the clueless parent, but also for the clueless child. When I was getting into the game as a wee lad in the mid-90's, the regulars at the store I frequented (the long lost Phoenix Games in Minneapolis, MN) were across the board friendly, helpful, and even encouraging. Not only did it make me feel welcome, but it helped me see, early on, that this sort of hobbying is a potentially lifelong endeavor and practiced by reasonable, even admirable adults. If we want better, healthier gaming communities, it is up to us to be the ambassadors of the games we play. Store attendants are great, but even children know when they are being sold something. Guidance from a more disinterested Third Party is paramount to feeling like part of a community rather than a consumer
Plus, isn't it nice to feel like you're helping out your FLGS, the guys and gals that make sure you have a place to play with scenery and tables and a variety of opponents (maybe free, certainly cheap)?
A somewhat serious reply to a not so serious post; I do completely understand the desire to "not be bothered."

Should have helped the little lad get all the models you like.
And asked mom if he needs lessons.
1 she could be single mom, and you'd be the nice man from the games shop.
2 when the kid gets bored with them, you can have them.
