Who here remembers Total Annihilation by Cavedog Entertainment? There is a new, free way to play an enhanced version of Total Annihilation. This is the Spring project, which pretty much is Total Annihilation with modern RTS graphics. It also is free to play online with others. If anyone wants to see what it is all about the Spring website is [url]http://springrts.com/

I remember both. TA was the best RTS game of its era, bar none-- yes, far better than starcraft ever was and likely ever will be. Didn't Spring officially drop TA though, because it was a copyrighted thing and they couldn't continue developing it and make money off of it?

That looks pretty cool!
I didn't play T.A. when it came out and the whole T.A. vs StarCraft debate was raging, but I was quite impressed when I picked it up later on. I can't say which I like better, but from a technical standpoint, TA is the superior strategy game.
Warzone 2100 is another open-source one that I enjoyed a lot several years ago: http://wz2100.net

Warzone, TA, Starcraft...man, it's great to know that I wasn't the only one playing these games.
Pretty sure all those games rocked actually, neither being better than the other. Although the GIANT fights you could have in TA were pretty damn amazing. Especially after the CC expac was dropped, playing ARM against CORE you had to plan for the eventuality that were Krogoths (shudder).
Another game that's getting a HD remake is Homeworld and HW2 from what I hear. Gearbox said as much.

ARM eventually got its own equivalent to the Krogoth through DLC units, never mind the hilarious amount of custom units made by the players.
