I just found out about this game the other day from GOG.com (I check them every day to see what's new). It will be released on the 8th, but I just finished playing the free beta. I'm definitely looking forward to buying and playing the full game.
Basically, you're the guy working the border checkpoint in a city divided between two cold war countries in 1982, Kolechia and Arstotzka (Glory to Arstotzka!). Your job is to verify the passports and other required documents of everyone coming into Arstotzka (Glory to Arstotzka!). So, it's kind of like a puzzle game, checking all the information for discrepancies, and the rules change every day as the Arstotzka (Glory to Arstotzka!) Ministry of Admissions publishes new entry requirements every day. There's even a story to it, although I only got a few hints of it in the beta. I must say, there is a certain satisfaction in stamping DENIED on someone's passport.

I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks
What actual story is there? All I recall are the terrorist attacks and one guy who kept coming back, doing anything he could to get into the country (including crayon-marked papers).
I've been keeping an eye on it over at GoG too. I don't think I'll pick it up (I've got NO time for anything fun these days,) but I'm intrigued, and I'm glad to hear your guys' preliminary reports.
Last time I played the demo (around march?) you got 5 money for any processed guy (no matter the result) and the maximum fine for error was also 5.
I know that's not the "correct" way to play it but you could get enormous amounts of money for allowing everyone without checking. At worst a person would give you 0 cash but you processed tons of people so you still ended with numerous error-free people.
Also simply denying is much faster than calling backup / asking about missing papers.
It does make it a little less intense and stressful and I want it to be harsh on me.
Overall I've been waiting for this for a looong time and I'm excited it's finally here.

I've been playing the release version. Lots of fun. There definitely is a story in there, too. I would be curious to see what happens when I start a new game and make some different choices.
