A bit of a noob-ish question, but are they? As I only play my one friend, I have yet to catch up to 6th ed. I'm getting the rules shortly, but shouldn't those powers be in the BRB? If it's an extra $16 I don't have to buy, then I can put that toward other things. Or do people prefer having the cards/is it worth buying them?

Yes you must buy them! Buy all things that Games Workshop sells!!!
On a serious note, you do not need them. I have them because I find it easier to use them then always referring to the book but that is just me. They are not game changing in any way that would disrupt the process of playing in general.

Need? No, you don't need them. The powers are in the BRB (or codex for stuff like Daemons) Its a nice to have. I keep mine out on the table to keep track of all the powers I have. ( When I run my nids, it can be a paint to remember odd powers you only use a few times)

The powers are detailed in the rulebook / codexes, so the cards aren't essential. They're more of a convenience thing to help you look up the rules quicker, assign powers to certain units, and even leave as a marker to show an active power in play.

They're super handy and nice to have around. Not mandatory by any means, but it's easier to have a couple psychic cards with your powers handy than it is to flip back to the page of the rulebook/codex that contains said power.

I've only ever had one psyker per game and found it perfectly fine to just write down the 1-3 powers and get the jist of what they do from the book. Much better than getting a few dozen cards that I'll use 1/20 of per game. My friend does it all the time though. He just uses the cards to lay next to the unit to mark which one has what effect. So I can see a purpose to it.
|
I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

I think you could probably say that in reference to just about anything. So the answer(s) is(are): I can't. I don't wanna. I won't do as good a job. I'm lazy. etc, so on.

Yeah, I'd rather spend a couple bucks to get them than I would to make my own using paper textures, transcribed text from the rulebook, and Illustrator or Photoshop to toss them together. I also have a lousy printer so I'd rather have them as is. They're nice and solid and have cool John Blanche artwork on the back.

Because while the idea of having a deck of cards with my stupid Boreale face on the back would be hilarious, it would take a while to actually make the cards. The time spent making them look as good as the GW ones wouldn't really justify the $8 or whatever to buy them.
That and that's more time I could spend painting my minis

I think I may use the 'Why not make your own?' argument in every new release thread ever now.
'Those new Space Marine Centurions are nice, but why not make your own?'

Yeah, if I were to do this, it would be a simple hand-written, torn out notepad page with the power's name and rules written on it with no fanciness, and seeing as I'll probably get that wrecked in short order with lack of proper storage, I think I'll get them anyway. Same with the CSM cards, seeing as I'm going to run 1k sons anyhow.

Is it really too much hassle to type up and print your own custom cards where conversion, assembly, and painting are a staple of the hobby. I mean it really doesn't seem that difficult, and you only need to make the few that you plan to use.

Nope, it isn't. But some of us are lazy, see the bottled water industry for reference.

Depends where you are in your life. For me, time is far more valuable than the cost of the cards; they already exist, and are cheaper than spending the time to make my own.
When they DON'T exist (see, e.g., WHFB Mysterious Terrain), I have spent the time to print up my own on business card stock before, because it's much, much more convenient to have things like that separate & discrete.

Don't you only get 1 card per psychic power? I'd need more than that considering the amount of duplicate psychic shrieks I'll want to have, and the amount of duplicate haemorrhages I often end up having.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Unless you're running very few psykers, you'll usually use them for reference, rather than to track which psykers have what powers. Piece of paper still works best for that (although for tournaments, I print out a sheet w/the tables for each, so I can roll & circle quickly).

They dont really work for Tyranids because youre likely to have 4 or more Psykers (Tyrants, Tervigons, potentially Zoans) all rolling on Biomancy, so youd need copies of many of the cards. The pack only provides you with 1 of each I understand?
So its useful if you only have 1 or 2 psykers, or use different disciplines all the time. Less so for Tyranids, IMO.
Theyre also really handy if you play Necrons, Tau, Dark Eldar or Black Templars.

I imagine their usefulness is directly proportional to the number of psykers in your army. With my one lonely Sorcerer kicking around, I can live without them. Other people with many, many psykers rely on those cards to stay sane.
