I've been researching how to do paint chipping/scratches for my Ultramarines (as an alternative to lining edges which I just don't do very well) namely using the sponge with black paint and adding some boltgun metal.

Specifically, what is the process for chipping/damaging metallics? I'm interested in chipping the shoulder pauldrons of the Ultramarines gold trim (Second Company). I imagine it may be as simple as sponging on some black and adding some silver. Is that correct? Does anyone have some advice or pics they can share?

Also, any techniques on chipping silver paints? I want to add some damage to my Grey Knights which are boltgun metal - drakenhof nightshade - boltgun metal (layer) - chainmail (highlights). Would black sponging with an even brighter or duller metal work?

Thanks for the discussion in advance!

Thanks, spears!

Anything for gold-specific chipping?

I imagine black sponging - boltgun metal highlights would be the way forward.

On my titan, I did the chipping very simply by adding a bright silver-gold (whatever your sub-extreme highlight is) dag, and filling it or off-setting it with a very dark brown.

Do the highlight first, you can then paint the dark colour over it to sharpen it, rather than attempting to paint stupidly thin lines under insane control. If possible, always find the lazy way.

I wouldn't suggest using sponge method, as you're likely to get it in the wrong places, which will then need fixing. A good pointy brush and some patience is the quicker method for this situation IMO.

@winterdyne-

The chipping you achieved on the gold trim is precisely what I envisioned for the trim of my Ultramarines. A white base with black highlight seems to be the way forward.

I agree that for the trim a pointy brush is probably the best process. I was referencing the sponge method for other parts of the model such at the feet and other sharp edges or parts that would naturally get worn down/chipped.

I read that a graphite pencil with bright silver as a highlight works well on darker colored models, so I may try that.
