Now, I hope you'll excuse this subject, but it isn't just another question posed by a gamer wondering whether it's worth buying a codex. In fact, I don't participate in the gaming side of 40K at all, merely contenting myself with a passion from modelling and painting. However, having found myself in the rather unique position of finding a very cheap, brand new 6th edition Space Marine codex (Salamander Space Marines being my particular passion), I was wondering if it was worth purchasing it purely from a modelling perspective. Now, I know it isn't a 'how-to' or other such modelling article, but I merely wonder if it is completely devote to the gaming aspect of the hobby, or does it contain material that would be of interest to one such as myself who enjoys the modelling and lore side of 40K?

I just thought I'd put it to Dakka before rushing out to snap it up before due consultation.

Many Thanks,

Warpig

All the codices contain lore, fluff and images of painted models from the studio, as well as artwork related to the setting and the story, so if that's what you're after, it would depend on how much the book would cost and whether or not you think that is a fair price.

Mind you, the non-game-related content is definitely the minority of the book, and often takes the form of side-bar flavor text, one-page stories, and the occasional single sentence or two in explaining a given special rule or ability.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Ah, so if I don't intend to get into the gaming side (Which I can't see I will in the immediate future), then there isn't too much relevant in the codex?

If you don't intend to play the game I would skip the codex. There's no fluff or pictures you can't find online. The rules, however, are more difficult to find

I like the fluff an artwork plenty, and enjoy reading through a codex on its own before I ever even build an army list. There's a decent selection of painted minis of the army represented, but hardly anything comprehensive or mandatory. If you can get it cheap it's worth grabbing, but if you're not gonna game with it, I'd hardly say it's necessary.

There's usually 1/4 devoted to fluff, 1/4 to painted figures and 1/2 to rules. So if you get it for around half price then go for it.

I don't game but I always buy a codex for my armies personally I enjoy reading them and I like using them for reference point for my armies.

Wow, where did you find an as yet unreleased codex?

Unless you meant 5th edition marine codex.

Cheers people, I'll probably give it a pass at the moment as I'd rather spend the money buying up some more bits, but if in the future I have some free money, I may invest in a codex (If I can find a cheap one going), just as a bit inspiration for further modelling. That said, that day is a long way off... Anyway, many thanks all, that covers all I wanted to know.

EDIT: @Grey Templar - I'm just a boss like that...

Like I say I don't game some I have no idea about all the varied editions and such. I just thought that as 40K is now into 6th edition so too would the SM codex be - obviously not . Forgive my epic fail, I'm just gonna... yeah... I should go now...
