I started playing the Android:Netrunner LCG from FFG recently, and I have to say that I pretty much suck at playing in the role of the Corporation. Does anyone have any generalized advice/strategies for succeeding as a Corporation player? If we want to get specific, I could use some help running the Jinteki starter deck from the base set, as I refuse to move on to another corporation or expansion before nailing the basics.

Jinteki is definitely fun to play. I never bought past the starter, but from what friends tell me the power level stays fairly consistent throughout the expansions. All you need is the starter to be competitive(IMO) once you get the rules down. It's always a blast- whether you play runner or corp.

I've played a tiny little bit. My advice can only be this: remember you can play everything face down. The runner doesn't need to know anything about you unless they take some action.

Sometimes just throw a random BS card down inside a data fort that you have no intention to activate. The runner either runs it (and wastes cash/activations/maybe takes damage) or else thinks its a trap and lets you play the real card without touching it because they think you're just laying more traps.

I'd actually like to hear some strategy too, I've just played a few games and did what came naturally, not really thinking about it.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

I'm a fairly experienced player. You can find some good information on the website stimhack.com, but basically the game of Netrunner has four phases.

Phase One: ICE isn't up everywhere yet and Runner hasn't installed much of anything. Runner can run with impunity for cheap or free. This is most commonly found in the very early game but also occurs in some situations where Corp has lost ICE to derez effects, Parasite, etc. Runner has the advantage. Note that it's possible to bring yourself out of this phase by mistake as the Runner by installing essential programs without a Killer or AI in the early game, making you highly vulnerable to program trashing.

Phase Two: ICE is up everywhere, Runner isn't rigged up. This is most commonly found in the early midgame. Corp has the advantage. Generally speaking, most strong Corp decks try to initiate an opening that moves to phase two as quickly as possible and delays phase three as long as possible via program trashing, flatline threat, or simply forcing the Runner to spend their money on running expensive servers a lot (Astroscript Pilot Program and SanSan City Grid are great for this), hence preventing the runner from using their clicks and creds to develop further.

Phase Three: Runner is rigged up and can get in pretty much anywhere for not that much money. This is most commonly found in the late midgame. Runner has a strong advantage in this phase. Generally speaking most Runners try to close out the game in this phase, often by establishing an R&D lock. However, if the Corp has successfully scored enough in Phase Two, they can still pull out a win in this phase.

Phase Four: Runner is rigged up but Corp has very large amounts of ICE protecting key servers (nearly always R&D and perhaps one remote at this phase). While the Runner can get in pretty much anywhere, it's expensive enough that they might take a turn or two recharging between runs, creating windows for the Corp to score. This is most commonly found in the endgame. Corp has the advantage. Many modern Corp decks do not actually try to reach this phase because it is difficult to do and often requires adding cards that are unhelpful earlier.

The most important skill in Netrunner is playing and designing decks that exploit the game phases you want for as long as possible.

Glad to see some interest in Netrunner here on Dakka. I've gotten back into the game after Ebay-ing what I had originally (thinking that the game was never going to take off in my area. It did, but some 4-5 months after I picked it up). I'm actually hoping someone can help me out on making a couple of decks for an upcoming game night. It's an NBN tag deck that's somewhat a economy/grip destroyer. It's either this or an HB deep ice deck.

Heya! I'll try to help out here. It's always good to have multiple strategies and it looks like you have partially damaging and partial fast-advance. Honestly NBN can fast advance even without trying all that much so it's not hard to pull both off.

Astroscript is probably the best agenda NBN has, I'd stick with 3 of them. Restructured is also very difficult to score, though having a 3-pointer can be nice. However NBN as two 3/2 agendas in faction. Honestly 3 Astroscripts and 3 Project Beale are going to be your core agendas. Personally, I'd completely cut Restructured Datapool. I've only ever been able to make it useful once.

Not bad, though having so few assets makes DRT a risky play. I think it fits better in a never-advance deck. And honestly, if this is the way you want to go, I'd go all out and take 3 copies. Some other expensive-to-trash money makers would also be nice. Private Contracts or Marked Accounts can help (though not needed).

Honestly with the way your deck is looking, I might go with scorched over DRT......though I suppose you do have enough influence for two of each. Might not be the way you want to go, though. Look up the Never-Advance deck on BGG, it might fit your tastes a bit more.

A decent range of ice, though I'd cut out Data Hound (bad card) and TMI (obsolete card). Looks like you're using shadow for tags, while it can be decent, I think you have better non-influence options. Non-ice things like Bernice Mai be a way to guarantee that multiple DRTs can hit at once after the runner has already commited to a succesful run.

Ichi is a decent splash! Viktor 1.0....eh....I don't know.....he's too expensive for my tastes and Yog.0 eats him. A pair of enigmas would work just as well as both Viktor and Enigma are cheap early-game ice.

I also personally find it a crime not to include 3 pop-up windows....that card is seriously amazing.

Looks good except for Foxfire (nearly useless card). I'd replace it with either Anonymous tip (Green Level Clearance or Beanstalk Royalties if you have the influence). Mid-season Replacements could work, but you have a lot of 3 point agendas so it could get risky. Maybe scorched earth or snare (yes I know it's an asset, but the thing pretty much functions as RnD and HQ defense)?

Definitely get 3 copies of SanSan if you can. Bernice Mai is also very useful.

Thanks for the tips, Nungunz!

The only problem is that I'm working with a single copy of the Core set atm, so the cards that only have 2 or 1 copies in the Core - Scorched Earth, SanSan, Autoscript - are what I'm working with. I'm still holding out that FFG will release a 'Completionist' expansion that fixes the Core set problems, tho I might as well go out and get a second copy and ask around for a third SanSan. I was actually hoping to nab a promo Scorched Earth at a Game Night this Saturday, ha!

I'd make the arguement for Shadow in that it not only throws a trace at the runner, it also risks giving 2 cred, to me, which further challenges the runner when fighting againsty traces, and helps my economy. Also, that's Viktor 2.0 in there, which is stronger then what Yog.0 can handle, needs 2 clicks to break, and is capable of throwing out Brain Damage.

I should also mention that I also only have What Lies Ahead, Humanity's Shadow, Future Proof, and C&C. I've half convinced myself that I should just pick up the rest of Genesis and the second Core at this weeks game night.

Also, any though on re-titling this to be Dakka's [Netrunner] main thread?

Considering how FFG's previous LCGs have been, this won't happen. You can always check ebay as they have a ton of the two-of completions. The 1-ofs are very, very, hard to find. I have two core sets, the only cards I really do want a third copy of are: Grimoire, SanSan, Corporate Troubleshooter, and Desperado.

I derped on Viktor 2.0, though it was 1.0. Still, that's a pricey splash, I'd almost suggest Edge of the World over Viktor 2.0 for brain damage, but test it out to see if it works. 2 Subroutines isn't overly difficult to click through mid-late game so I still vote Eli. You're call there.

Oh man, I hadn't even thought of Eli! Best part of that is I'd free up some influence.

I seems that Cyber Exodus is a definite pickup for the Corp stuff. Maybe I'll just get that and a second Core... for now.

If you're just playing casually, don't worry about it. If you want, CoolStufInc has all the netrunner stuff for dirt cheap. Hell the core set there is less than the cost of a 1-of set on ebay. Might as well buy there and get rid of any of the 2-ofs and 3-ofs on ebay or something and make the cash back.

Cyber Exodus is great for both runner and corp, it's the second datapack I'd reccemend getting. Viper is decent, Private Contracts is decent, Marked Accounts is decent, Pop-up Window is amazing, Edge of the World is fun and sometimes decent, Chimera can be both good and bad depending on the opponent. Vitruvius is also great for HB. Sunset is meh. Woodcutter is crap. Commercialization is only decent in Weyland: Because We Built It (and still situational).

Runner side: Test Run is now obsolete (except for a 1-use femme token if needed) due to clone chip and self-modifying code. Snitch is pretty lack luster. Public Sympathy is okay, Personal Workshop was amazing, but has slowly been creeping towards obsolete. Muresh Bodysuit is crap. Never Agent is okay. Joshua B. pairs very, very well with New Angeles City Hall, but is very situational. Emergency Shutdown is Amazing. Dino and Chaos Theory are pretty good.

I've commented a lot here so I figured I'd post a decklist. In the local league that's going on, two of the "Achievements" are using no influence and limiting yourself to a max of two copies per card. I want to do both at the same time. I haven't drafted up a runner idea yet, but here is my thoughts on corp.

So how to go about choosing a corp? Well, it needs a mix of solid and cheap ice, good econ, needs good agendas, and can't rely on out-of-faction assistance. It took me about 10 seconds of thinking to settle on HB: Engineering the Future. It passively generates cash. Has some great agendas and a way to fast-advance. Ice has a solid spread among the different types and has both cheap and beefy ice. Some great operations. And some great assets. Overall I think it has the best shot.

I'm not overly happy with it, mostly due to the self-imposed limitations. I can probably get rid of Director Haas Pet Project. Don't get me wrong, she is great, and can secure a win from 6 AP quickly. However at this point, I feel she is superfluous and reducing the agenda count might help....granted I don't know if that is a good idea because there is no way in hell I can attrition a half-decent runner.

I feel some beefier ice may be needed just to mess with Atman and the like. Ichi 2.0 or Heimdall 2.0, though the only way these are getting rezzed are with help from Priority Req and the like....I could slip in Bioroid Efficiency Research....but once again it's superfluous. Honestly what I would really like is 2 copies of Corporate Troubleshooter to help with defense.

Cerebral Overwriter could be okay, but I don't have anything to follow the hit up with (Zed doesn't count and Sentinel is outclassed by Efficiency Committee). Melange is great, but something like Eve or Private Contracts might be more lucrative (and expensive to trash for the runner).

The lack of decent codegates is annoying. I really miss tollbooth. I may ditch 1 viktor 1.0 for a viktor 2.0. Only four sentries could also hurt, but the rest of the ones available are so god-awful expensive. Draco is probably the only other one I'd consider bringing along.....maybe one copy of Ichi 2.0, but I can't really build a deck around him.

And once again, Corporate Troubleshooter would be another great addition, but I have no idea where to ditch cards.

Maybe something like:

- 1 Director Haas' Pet Project or Gila Hands (Using Director Haas to recycle stuff from archives is amazing)
- 1 Archived Memories
- 1 Viktor 1.0
- 1 Heimdall 1.0

+ 2 Corporate Trouble Shooter
+1 Viktor 2.0 or Ichi 1.0 (The trace on Viktor 2.0 is a serious downer)
+1 Heimdall 2.0

Thoughts on this experiment?
