Subject: Possibly starting a Beastman army

Morphing Obliterator

Hi all
I am considering starting a beastman army for wfb and would likely be aiming to collect around 2500pts total (I already have OK as my main army and don't want to collect as many points as them).
I don't have the book yet but was wondering if any beast players out there could suggest a decent army list to work to?
I don't really want to include a lot of things like minotaurs as I already have the ogres for massed monstrous infantry, but any other units and tactics are fair game!
Thoughts people?

Massed Gors for your core (units of 30-50). Ungors as flanking chaff. Bestigors to win the game (again 30+).
Shamans gathered arround a herdstone and skull of Rakos (+1dice, +1 level for every caster in range), or a doombull with magic backup for your lord and hero choices. BSB is mandatory, as with most older codizes.

Do you have any kind of sample list you could show me please?
Also what magic items/spell lores work well for beastmen, other than the ones you have said?

I can post a rundown of the book in a private message if you want, but now, I shall post the strongest build the book has.
Level 4 death with fencers blades. He snipes off characters and soulblights things. Soulblight is effectively a reverse wildform that can be bubbled.
Bestlord, Heavy armour, shield, Dragonbane gem, 4+ ward, crown of command. He is in the list to provide LD 10, and stubborn.
Wargor BSB with the scaly skin gift, Heavy armour, and the Beast Banner. Toughness 5, 2+ armour and he provides your gor with the means to get a tonne of S4 attacks.
Level 1 beast mage. YOu have Soulblight for dealing with the wounding issue, he is here to help you get through armour.
Level 1 shadow with the herdstone. He provides miasma and a means to amass power dice.
Level 1 shadow with a dispel scroll. He provides miasma and carries a scroll.
48 odd gor with full command and AHW. These guys are one of your main combat units. And the bunker for the BSB and beast mage.
4 units of 5 Ungor raiders. 30 points for a chaff drop? HELL YES.
2 units of 5 harpies. SImilar purpose to Raiders, but they also hunt war machines better.
30 odd Bestigor with full command and the standard of discipline. These guys are your second combat unit and bunker for your level 4 and beastlord. They provide you the means to get the LD 10 aura.
2 lone razorgor, These guys flank things and hunt chaff.
2 Tuskgor chariots. Amazing at killing disk heroes and chaff. Also great for running into flank combats and baiting charges,

This is easily the best build in the the book and makes a frankly "iffy" codex workable. Nice list indeed sir.

Seconded, 10 chaff drops 2 combat blocks and as reliable a magic phase as your going to get in this edition, i shall indeed be using this list from now on. However i would consider putting the jagged dagger on the GBS.

May your chest inspire the hopes and dreams of millions.
May your arm girth frighten the elderly, slow moving adults and very small children.
May your gains be plentiful.
Go forth and LIFT.

I am not sure if I want to play a new army that only has one viable build currently (which I guess is a flaw with a lot of old books).
As much as I like the beastman asthetic, I might just wait until they have a new book.
I am not a mega competitive player, but I would like more than one play style available to me.

There is more than one viable build. The Minobus works. The ambush list can be made to work. You can run the flying doombull. The ghorgon list can work. People say the book is 'iffy' because they run the army as a combat army, rather than the movement control army that it is.

I don't think its iffy because of that. For me the issue with the book (as with most old books) is the points costs for units.
I actually think Beastmen have some great units, Bestigor for example are still great for their points, but other units suffer from it. If costed better they would prove and very tough and hard hitting army.

The only badly costed units in the book are the rares and minos.

what units are rare for the beasts?
Are they over or undercosted?
Would you say the minos are too cheap or too expensive?

I would say they are over costed when compared to similar units in other books.
That and as Darkavenger says the rares are generally overcosted.

Minos are overcosted as they're T4 and have light armour. And lose their parry after 1 round of combat, or the moment a mincharacter joins them.

Terrible cost, terrible unit. Therefore, the cost befits the model.
