It's time to get excited again about Space Marines. Their new codex is reportedly on the way.

I have collected a lot of painted and unpainted space marine models and bits over the years so I believe the time has finally come to pull it all together and field an army.

My goal is to finish a 2000 point force by the end of January (a little bit under six months from now). The army is comprised of a primary detachment from the 2nd Company of the Ultramarines and an allied detachment from the Dark Angels 4th Company.

The Ultramarines include a librarian, four tactical squads with Razorbacks, a Sternguard squad in a drop pod, and a Thunderfire Cannon.

The allied Dark Angel force is composed of a librarian and two tactical squads in Razorbacks.

Fortunately, 33 of the Ultramarine infantry are already painted thanks to an eBay purchase back in 2010. So I only have to paint fourteen Ultramarines (eight tactical marines, five Sternguard, and the Thunderfire Cannon techmarine).

All of the Dark Angels require paint. I'll already own the models thanks to Dark Vengeance and a trade with a friend. I am also replacing the sergeants with DA Veteran Sergeants (using the GW veteran sprue) since I want models armed with combi-bolters.

The only models that I have to acquire are the five Sternguard, the Thunderfire Cannon, a drop pod, and four Rhinos. Games Workshop should release a new boxed plastic set of Sternguard so I will wait for that kit. I also need combi-weapons that I can magnetize and enough bits to arm my Razorbacks with lascannons and twin-linked plasma guns. I think that Chapterhouse Studios will help me out unless Games Workshop releases a new Razorback kit that includes the necessary parts.

So, to sum up, I need to acquire and paint 43 models (including vehicles) in about five months. I also need to dress up the entire army's bases (76 total models) in a ruined urban theme.

My fellow DCM, d-usa, is starting his own space marine renaissance for a full company (3rd or 5th) of Raven Guard. You can see his new project blog here. I think he and I will try to keep each other motivated until we finish. Anyone else starting a new space marine army for the new codex? Let me know and post a link in this thread!

I am starting my project with the 21 allied Dark Angel marines from their 4th Company. The inaugural model is Turmiel, the librarian from Dark Vengeance. Sure, he was with the 5th Company then but as a librarian he gets to support all of the companies.

Here is the first WIP photo. I usually post lots of WIP shots so that I can remember which paints I used and the order in which I used them.

See you later! It's time to paint.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

Looks like it should be an interesting project. I didn't think to pin up my individual pieces, they are just blue-tac'ed to a bottle cap. Will have to use some pins with the next model.

Well I think I will run with you. I started DA back in January, but have taken my summer break since then, and last night decided to get back into it. So heres my blog and maybe the three of us can push each other.

Welcome to the party!

All motivation is good and I am curious to see what colors you use for your Dark Angels. I'm trying a few different colors after looking at a lot of models and techniques posted by various sources.

The primary influences for me are:

1. GW's scheme for Dark Vengeance (not on the web unfortunately)

2. MrWatchingpaintdry's YouTube video

3. TaleofPainters Tutorial

4. L.Bursely's YouTube videos

Once I get home from work I'll let you know my colors.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'm using Caliban green ( dark angels green) for my base coat. Keep in mind that I don't paint the models chaos black first. I airbrush my models the dark green first. I use Snot green for the high light I don't know what color that is in the new paints. I'm using blood red for the standard marines and get into the scab red once I'm into the death wing. I high light the blood red with blazing orange. I highlight the scab red with the blood. Using screaming skull for the robes with a Seraphim sepia wash. the armor I wash with the green wash. I use white scar for the swords on the shoulder pads and packs washed with badab black. Anything else you can think of let me know.

Today was a good painting day. I managed to get most of the way through my Dark Vengeance DA Librarian. He still needs a lot of highlighting and a decent base, but I need a break so I'll get my two squads of DA tactical marines prepped before I finish this model. I'll probably paint him in between trimming, gluing, and priming the ordinary marines.

He's a pretty standard Turmiel. I don't like shiny silver grenades so his are Catachan Green. The only other variations are a bit more variation among his keys and a spot of purple on his scroll bands. My light seems to reflect quite a bit off of the miniature so you cannot really see the proper colors and shades. I suppose I ought to get a cheap light box, though it seems superfluous for table top standard minis.

He's a superb miniature. GW really did a fantastic job on him and the limited edition chaplain in the Dark Vengeance set.

I am more motivated to get more marines done now so hopefully I'll have some updates to show you later in the week. Good luck and happy modelling!

Thats some nice work there man. Always nice to see a fellow Ultramarine man ready to take flak from others because of our mainstreamism

Thanks lipsdapips!

This is my allied Dark Angel librarian. I'll post shots of my Ultramarines when I start work on them.

I don't understand why some people hate Ultramarines. They seem to be the only true good guys in the 40K setting. The next closest faction might be the Imperial Fists.
