Hey Everyone,
My Local Gaming Club is running a tournament next month, I was instructed due to the time of release we would be required to use the current SM codex and not the new one.
HQ
Vulkan He'Stan- 190
Troops
Tactical Squad (x10)
Power Fist
Flamer/Multi-Melta 195 (385)
Tactical Squad (x10)
Power Fist
Flamer/Multi-Melta 195 (580)
Elites
Terminator Assault Squad
Thunder Hammer / Storm Shield 200 (780)
SternGuard (x10)
Combi- Flamers (x8)
Heavy Flamer (x2)
Power Fist
Drop Pod 370 (1150)
Heavy Support
Land Raider Redeemer
Multi-Melta 250 (1400)
Fast Attack
Attack Bikes (x3)
Multi-Meltas (x3) 150 (1550)
This leaves me about 200 points to play with. Logically, I think I should go with a third tactical squad to get the extra scoring unit.
Mind you that this may be for a tournament but I also enjoy playing Salamanders very fluffy.
I am open to suggestions and how to better round out this list.
Cheers.

First, don't list individual upgrade point costs, just unit totals. Full forum rules are in a sticky at the top of the page.
I'm not a big fan of powerfists, particularly on 1W models. I'd rather have combi weapons.
I'd mix a few c-meltas into your sternguard squad. Gives them a little flexibility.
I'd get some transports for the tacs. Either drop pods or rhinos.
I do agree that you could use another troop pick. It might be worth getting some scouts manning an ADL for AA.
3 attack bikes in a squad seem overkill, particularly with Vulcan TLing them. One alone might be a free first blood killpoint, but 2 should do the trick. If you have spare points, running 2x2 would be nice, or just drop one and spend the 50 points elsewhere.
Overall, not a bad list.

I have little exp w/ power fists so I can't weigh in. Agree with combi meltas or MM on sternguard. Where is Vulkan hanging? Termies? Is there enough room in your LR? With what you are saving on PFs and Attack bikes you could maybe get some Laser backs and combat squad your Tacs for backfield and Ork shots on fliers... 2 TL Lascannons. Just a thought...

I like it btw.

Yeah, I'd lose the PFs and get melta bombs or maybe a rhino or two for the tacs. I prefer having a troops choice for every 500 pts so in a 1750 I'd get 3 tacs and 5 scouts or maybe 3 full tac/scouts but how you play them affects that decision as well. I also don't run bikes but I understand the tactics behind grabbing some.

The idea would be along the lines of.
Place Vulkan with Terminators. It's a squad of 5 so they can all fit in the land Raider. Run that up the middle to try and draw the battle in, tying up as many units as possible. From the games I have played the unit seems to be able to hold their own, and the Land Raider typically makes it.
Use the tactical squads to sit on/compete for objectives. I usually put power fists in the Tac Squads just because in my travels I've noticed there is always that unit they can not seem to compete with or wound because they aren't strong enough. Usually, it allows the Vet Srg to step up and take somethings out.
Stern Guard, are meant to cause havoc, drop pod into the back field and unleash a fury of flame the minute they step out of the pod. I have contemplated combat squading them so that they can fire at two different targets the minute they land. Which is where I could see the Combi-Meltas coming in hand.
The attack bikes are meant for two things, to be anti-tank, and a shot absorber. In past games people either totally ignore them, or waste a round or two firing away at them. They tend to be a bit more reliable than a Landspeeder in my opinion.
I have also contemplated rhino's but it seems they draw a lot of fire before they can even get off the ground, leaving the tack squad to hoof it anyway. I would be willing to field them though.
I know I do have a lack of anti-air, and frankly could care less. I plan on being in combat or cover. Really not allowing them a clear target.

Two thunderfires clock in at the points you need, and will really add some smashing power against hordes... or anything else, really. Don't leave home without them!
