Subject: Smash attack rules?

I will try and explain this the best I can without braking into full rules. My opponent was running a army from the Chaos demons book. I know vary little of this codex but I did buy it after this game so I could get up to speed on this. My question is about a item that gives a added +D3 to attacks and If I remmber right some other stats go up with this. When he decided to do a smash he took the base attacks and halved them like normal but added a full D3 attack at the smash level. I told him the way I understood the rule was it added D3 to the base and then the total should be halved. Not that it was a big deal I think he would have taken care of my tank without it.

Smash halves the Attack Characteristic. Then all bonuses are added to that. Check the FAQ.

From the BRB FAQ:
Q: The rulebook says that you halve your Attacks characteristic if
you perform a Smash attack. However, if a Monstrous Creature has
an uneven number of Attacks, (3 for example), but has charged that
turn, does it receive the bonus Attack for charging before or after
halving its Attacks? (p42)
A: You halve the model’s Attacks characteristic first, then
apply any additional modifiers. In the example above, the
model would halve its Attacks first (rounding up to 2), then
receive a bonus Attack for charging.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Not to beat a dead horse on this but just to clear things up lets do a play out of this.
Base attacks 3
charged +1
Wargear +D3
Base cut in half and rounded up with smash is 2 attacks at x2 S then add 1 of charge and 3 for Wargear total of 6 smash attacks?

You would have 4-6 smash attacks on the charge depending on what you roll. And if you throw in Warp Speed there....

Awesome to know. I've totally been selling myself short all of this time on my 3 attack charging MC. Should have had 3 smashes instead of 2.

Yep, another example is a Tervigon with crushing claws and warp speed:
Base Attacks: 3, halved to 2.
Charge: +1
Wargear +D3
Warp speed +D3
So a Tervigon can have 9 str10 re-rolling to penetrate or to wound (Toxin sacs) attacks.

The FAQ really only clarifies the way the rules worked already. Have a look at modifiers in the rulebook - you perform multiplication and division first, then apply any addition or subtraction, then lastly if there are any set values they overwrite the lot.
The only way that a "modifier" can apply first (and hence be multiplied or divided) is something that states it changes the base statistic. The only example I can think of are the added +1T from Bikes, and even that's already accounted for in the profile in more recent Codexes to avoid confusion.

Assuming Blade of blood is the plus d3 which only works if outnumbered (gives the rampage rule to the bearer), and as such cannot have warpspeed on him as its Khorne only :(
