Relatively new to space wolves and I was wondering how most people manage your pods? The list I'm building has three in it, one with 8wolfguard with combo meltas and plasma with rune priest, one with nine grey wolves with melta gun, rune priest, and one with 10 wolves two flamers and a plasma pistol, wolf standard. Is this a decent load out? I feel like it will take a lot of skill to know where to drop these in to maximize damage but also not to completely suicide these units. The rest of my army has long fangs, SM allies with libby, termies, lrc and some scouts. Any general advice on to manage pods, especially the troop squads would be great.

I always press dat, if you know what I mean.

Look at what the enemy is bringing and aim the pod at units it's cargo can kill. Dont send the flamer squad against termis. Dont send the wolfguard squad against 30 orks.

Drop pods are all about the alpha strike, so make sure you choose the correct targets. The 6" walk out and drop pod rules makes getting your primary weapons where they will do the most alpha damage pretty reliable.

Bring even numbers and include cheap disposable units as well to buff the numbers. In the DP portion of my Legion army I have 2 Tac squads(not cheap but best I can get) and two support squads plus a command squad. The order they drop is totally dependent on what is on the board. If they start vehicles, my support drops, if they reserve vehicles my Tacs drop . You will figure it out. The non-drop detachment of my force simply lays down a hail of fire from the get go(in theory).

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

I want to start a drop pod army too... the advice I've heard is actually an odd number of pods, so that half rounded up would come down first term... So if you have 3 2 would come down first turn.

I like how you your pods are made up now though I'd drop the plasma pistol from the flamer squad, and put a wolf standard in both GH squads...

You always want an odd number of pods and ideally you buy pods for things like Long Fangs so you can deploy them and drop their empty pods in the 2nd wave to further frontload your initial wave.

Hey on a similar note, where does it say SW drop pods can drop without the squads inside. I am wondering if there is something that says something similar in the Legion list, then I wouldnt have to use two detachments.

Thanks for the responses. I wanted to bring an odd number to potentially go for a strong alpha with my two rune priests. I added the plasma pistol for some more firepower but I may drop. Why are wolf standards worth bringing?

I@ Col Dash I'm pretty sure you could always bring dedicated transport and just not deploy the unit inside. Like you can bring rhinos but you dont have to start your unit inside, same principle for pods. I could be wrong but I think thats right.
