So i have started a new strategy for this army this time.I am collecting everything i pretty much needed first. Before i paint them and assemble the Infantry. So here is what i got and few piks.
what i have.
9 open fire shermans
3 fireflies open fire
1 set of regular bf Sherans with firefly, was going to use theese as commmand models
5 Bf 1/2 traxs
5 point of contact 1/2 tracks

Infantry
alot of Bren gunner teams for the 1/2 tracks
2 Infantry platoons
medium mortar team
heavy mortar team
vickers mg team
Engineers

So here s what i need still.
Trucks,for the Infantry
Artillery
Universal carriers

So here is my dilema on what to get next .
Arty,it is toss up 5.5 or 25 pounders?
Stuarts or Cromwells?
Armored cars?
extra firefly?
For the Stuarts or cromwells question. i just probably buy both. How does the BF compare to psc? i heard that the PSC stuarts are a bit large.how is the PSC cromwells?
As for List i will be playing Armored Grenadier Guards LW.
As for choice what you prefer to have?or buy all of them eventually. But which ones should get next?i would like to at least be able to field them here in the near future after we finish up are d day caMPign games and Start Market Garden.Especially with Blood Bowl Season starting up here soon. Then mext year we start on are weird war(SCI-Fi ,Goth Horror,ww2 1945-? ) 15mm games.NAzis ,Aliens and Zombies what fun! Hitler should not have made a deal with the Aliens for UFo tech. Now they turned on him and deciede to take over the planet for themselves.

All from memory but this might help.

Re Arty, I'm pretty sure it is not an either/or question; you have to have 25pdrs to access 5.5" guns - though I am not aux fais with all lists.

Cromwells rock and allow you access to the Challenger which is nice. You can not field Cromwells with regular Shermans so that means a whole new tank for if you go that route (I did!).

Only going by the PSC Stuart thread here, they do look bigger than the BF ones but they do come with allot of Jalopy options, which I would guess is what you will field? So its a toss up there. I have some unfinished BF ones and am contemplating getting the PSC ones just to use Jalopy bits.

The PSC Cromwells seem to match up quite well with the BF ones. Ditto for half tracks btw, there are some discrepancies but not enough to worry about.

I don't think the Grenadier guards had Cromwell, Irish Guards did but that's a detail to check.

My thought if you are doing Brit armour either take cromwells of shermans - almost no tank list has both as choices.

My personal favourite is Canadian armoured recon from MG.

You can have cautious movement + eyes and ears on your shermans and fireflies

You can take Stuart's for recon some infantry and 25pdts for a nice little list

OK...

For artillery you can't have Medium artillery units of 5.5" guns without an equal number of 25pdrs in your force. So if you want 5.5" guns you have to have both, otherwise just 25pdrs.

Armored cars in late war are tough as a force of their own, but when included in an armoured company are very useful. Always nice to have those armoured cars spotting for the tanks to make it easier to hit those dug in infantry and gun teams.

Since you already have a bunch of shermans, the stuarts will compliment them better. The british armoured lists have either shermans or cromwells as the main battle tanks and none include both. Some of the D-Day armoured lists use cromwells supported by Fireflies before the challanger was deployed, but none of the forces saw regular M4 shermans and cromwells used together. I have an Irish Guards Armoured force made up of PSC shermans exclusively. Less than $100 for the entire army. Probably going to go a similar route for a Welsh Guards Armoured Recce Company as well using PSC cromwells. The Irish Guards Armoured force has the option to have more fireflies as each platoon can have 3 shermans and 1 firefly or 2 shermans and 2 fireflies. Also adding in some M10s with the 17pdr upgrade can be helpful as well if you have fewer fireflies. Dedicated tank hunters that can be kept in ambush are pretty darn useful in late war. Nothing on the other side of the table is going to hold up to being ambushed by 17pdr armed tank hunters from the side.

I use the market garden book. Id say 5.5s they've done their job on multiple games I've played.

With the models that you have already you coupled take a lorried infantry platoon:
Commander/2iC
Two platoons of infantry
Mortars (6)
Vickers (4)
2 squads of Shermans with 2 Fire Flies
1530pts (did that off my head)

Armourd cars are pretty good recce units

Here is a updated wip i am almost done building.Rite now the force is going to be a little over 3000 pts.but when done will be around 4000pts.
When i got more time i will post a list of what i have selected. It is now think i am sucker for Brit stuarts.Really like the recon move.I need a company of theese.
Their is still quite a few models not in the pik.this is mostly armor.

You want to get yourself some Achilles M-10C with their 17 pounders to make those Tigers and panthers quake in their boots. Even their frontal armor is well in play with those big guns.

I love collecting this way. Get everything at once and paint it as one complete army in one go.

It's works out cheaper and means you don't forget how you painted them (I've started a painting journal to record how i paint every model, because I always come back 6 months later trying to replicate the original paint job!).

I've been playing World of Tanks recently and finally getting to know some of the historical tanks and chassis variants (including the firefly). My question didn't seem significant enough to need it's own thread so figured I'd ask in the most recent Firefly related thread in FOW. What is the availability of the firefly variant in British and Canadian armies? (or even US forces if that is an option) Is it only one per platoon? Playing the video game might get me into historical wargaming for the first time. Sorry for the mild thread necro and thanks in advance for the answers.

>World Of Tanks
>Historical
>lololol (nah but I like WoT, but it isn't close to Historical. I mean the tank names and designs are there, but they don't act like their real counterparts very much nor do they face their real opponents very often. A lot of the tanks included were never actually used in the war either, but it's a fun game regardless!)

I can't tell you what the frequency is in real-life units, but in FoW it seems to be 1 per platoon (so 3 normal Shermans and 1 Firefly). It isn't available in US armies as far as I know. Try out Easy-Army and find the free British Armor list for more specific info.

The answer is....It depends. Some lists like in "MARKET GARDEN" allow two Fireflys per Platoon of 4 Tanks (Canadian Armoured Squadron List / Canadian Armoured Recce Squadron, British Armoured Squadron for 11th AD and Guards Armoured Division).

Ah, thanks. I tried looking at the Easy Army site mentioned above but apparently it's a pay site. Looking through the free pdfs on the FOW website, it doesn't look like the brits ever get the 76mm sherman. Is that strictly an american unit in FOW?

It's a pay site to use the books you actually have to pay to get. That way you aren't just using every book for free and never need to actually buy the book. It's like, $2 at most though. The lists in the Rulebook are all free though, along with a few others.

And yes, at least in the standard free lists, the Brits get the 75mm. I've only seen the 76mm with the Americans, but that might be in some list I haven't seen yet

The 76mm Shermans were only used in Italy by the British, I'm not sure if they are in any FoW British lists.

They might not be in general and it may be a pipe dream. I've been looking at the Polish 1st Armored Division list (partly as it is free and partly due to liking the idea) and the FOW background article seems to indicate it *should* have 76mm Shermans. I'm not sure if that's a balance issue or if its to not step on US Army lists' toes but it would be nice to be able to field both especially as it seems accurate historically and would serve to distinguish that division a bit more from other British based ones.

Currently their is no list to include both. But eventually they should have it for crossing the Rhine.Nice thought though.

Depends totally on which LW reference book you use. The british armored lists for the D-day invasion allow for a single fire fly per platoon in armoured forces that use shermans or cromwells. In the current Market garden book, the Welsh guards armoured recce platoon now has the challanger instead of the firefly as a single upgrade option per platoon, while the irish guards armoured company have the option of up to 2 fireflies per platoon as they were much more readily available by then in the war and were still kind of new and a bit rarer earlier in the western front.
