My Cryx army really seems to be having troubles playing against Cyngar. Right now we are playing at the 25pt Journeyman League, so your battlebox is required to be in your army list.

I'm currently using:

pDenny
-Skarlock Thrall
-Slayer
-Deathripper x2
-Defiler

Bane Thralls Min
-UA Officer and Standard

Necrotech
-Scrap Thrall

He is running:

pStryker
-Ironclad
-Lancer
-Squire

Journeyman Warcaster
-Charger

Stormblade Infantry

Black 13th

What seems to happen is the game comes straight down to if I can get his Black 13th in the first two turns. If I don't, their crazy abilities just run me down. MageStorm is incredible and denying my stealth really hurts. They're also pretty hard to hit with Scourge or a Defiler Spray. Last game we played I learned an important lesson and lost 5 banes to a mage storm after leaving my units a little too clumped up.

Are there any strategies I'm missing on getting rid of those pesky Black 13th? I was thinking of deploying the banes as far away as possible from them. And it really seems like if I go first, I'm actually behind the initiative since he can spend his first turn maneuvering to get the storm off. We're using battle boxes for the next 3 weeks, so its pretty annoying to get shot up every game.

Spread out to lessen the effect of mage storm.

Also, since you are new be aware that Ryan only gets to place one mage storm template and only Lynch has true sight so unless he uses fire beacon no one else benefits from it.

Also have a crack at killing junior with a suicide arc node. You'd be trading a node (4 points if its a ripper) for 7 points of his army (Junior and the now inert Charger). It doesn't specifically address your issue, but it is a good idea. It'll punish him for using anything other than a Hunter/Defender with Junior You'd be at 7s to hit and Dice-1 damage, so assuming boosting hit/damage, while Denny wouldn't be killing much else that turn, she'd almost definitely put Junior down.

And you'd only need 11s to hit the B13 with Scourge (assuming Blur is on them, otherwise it is just 8s), and being POW7 blast if you get your node close enough you could just boost damage (because it can only scatter a minimum distance) on the blast damage and you'd be rolling at Dice-4, killing them on average with boosted rolls. Alternatively, if you manage to hit them with Crippling Grasp early on, he has no way to remove it, and it will stop them using their special attacks.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Know which B-13 does what. Usually Ryan (the girl with two pistols) is the one you want to kill the most. Lynch (the leader with the fancy hat) has the truesight/anti-stealth shot.

How to kill Ryan? Run up an arcnode (ghostwalk it if you have to with the skarlok) to within 8 inches of Ryan and have pDenny send a boosted venom her way. You need an 8 to hit on 3 dice. not unreasonable. Killing her you need to do 6 dmg, again, not tough even without boosting (but I'd probably boost to make sure) and even if you leave her with 1 HP left the corrosion will probably kill her. Depending on how the unit is lined up you might be able to get other models in the spray, too, but don't forget to take her out first.

Another option is to run the arcnode about 3-4 inches from your target and use scourge. Don't boost to hit because even if it scatters it will still hit. Assuming she lives she is now knocked down and can be venomed easily. This will help you get past any DEF buffs that the spray doesn't ignore.

Yes, both of these are focus intensive and you will probably be sacrificing an arcnode, but you got rid of a major threat. And if you position the arcnode way off on a flank they will have to divert their forces to deal with it splitting them up and stopping them from moving toward objectives.

Another bit of advice. I'd try to get crippling grasp on the stormblades or ironclad early on. Again, run and sacrifice an arcnode if you must. Crippling grasp on a melee jack or unit pretty much takes it completely out of the game.

And I think that is even better advice. Don't be afraid to send those arcnodes 14" down the table to drop spells in your opponents face. You have 3 of them and their biggest use is the arcnode. If they do any attacks at all that is just a bonus. The scourge trick is tried and true. Knock a warcaster down and your banes will chew them up.

Do you have Bile Thralls?

Run a full unit of them straight at the 13th and hit them with multiple purges.

It is a journeyman league. And a unit of biles can be handy here or there, but he is better off making a balanced list.

And he has all the tools to do what he needs to do. just needs to learn how to use them. Which is the a huge reason why you do a journeyman league.

Mechanithralls and a surgeon are useful too. And are very good when used with Denny.

Gives you a good screen and you could even use them as a target to get an AOE in and clip the 13th.

I do feel your pain though. That high power AOE thing is a pain. Not as bad as chain lightening though...

Thanks for this. I really appreciate it. I guess I can boosted venom twice if I have to, just to make sure I get her ass if I miss the first time, and still have a focus leftover for boosting the actual hit. I can work around Lynch and his anti stealth gak, just not her godly POW 12 AOE that dosen't go to half POW on scatter/ not main target. That gak is insane.

That's Ok. You have eAsphysious, eDeneghra, Terminus, etc to all choose from.

Enjoy!
