Hey guard players of dakka, I'm after some suggestions.

What units do you use to tarpit/destroy fast moving/deep striking nasties that end up near an objective or amongst your gun line?

Ogryns? Vets? Allies?

I take straken on the regular (for fun more than anything else), but he has a tendency to get shot up before any CC begins.

I've heard of players throwing a infantry blob at a deepstrike unit, then counter charging with rough riders. That way the rough riders don't get overwatched. I haven't done it myself, but it sounds like a sound strategy.

Another more hilarious & unreliable way is to attempt to tank shock a deepstrike unit off the table. If you have multiple tanks & they initially fail tank shock test, if you use a additional tank you can tank shock again & they auto-fail. Which hopefully pushes them off the board.

Plasma vets (1 or 2 squads) usually deter or destroy anything that relies on armour saves, making shot work or terminators, lychguard ect.

Ogryn make a nice counter-charge unit, due to high T, multiple wounds and hitting hard with FC.

But really, if you absolutely must kill the a deathstar that doesn't rely on high T or invuln/cover trickery, a demolisher or two will make a dent in all but the toughest units.

This, but surround them with infantry first so they can't move, then they are auto destroyed from the fall back rule.

Or plasma, lots and lots of juicy plasma.

Can tarpit with stubborn units too, depends what they are pitting though.

Haha, I can't wait to try the tank shock trick.

Thanks guys, some good suggestions. I guess I'll just have to throw some more bodies into the fight along with a countercharge by straken or some RR. Ogryns would be nice but seeing as I have 5 spare pistolier horses I might try and convert them up.

I've also got two units of plasma vets that I use for disruption/objective claiming, maybe I'll keep one in my backfield too. Just to be safe.

I run three units of rough riders that make excellent counter attack/deathstar destroying units.

at 8 strong, they are less than 90pts and can and have on many many occasions destroyed units that are 300-500+pts with them, and even if they do not wipe them out, they will thin them out allowing you to gun them down .

and again at their low points cost, once they've done their job, they are disposable

Guardsmen. Just throw guardsmen at them and watch them spend the whole game trying to get out of tarpit after tarpit.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

I agree that plasma mechvets are pretty good, especially for how cheap they are. When you do the math, you're usually comparing the deathstar to at least 2 or 3 squads of them.

Also, las/multimelta (or las/plas if you're afraid of deepstrikers) punishers are a formidable defensive weapon, having both volume of fire and great S/Ap/ID capabilities on a single tough vehicle. I've seen them go through paladins like they weren't even there.

Or, if you're REALLY scared of deepstrikers, you can go with a king plasma tank.

Plasma vets is pretty much the best way to kill deathstars. If that doesnt work, turn to forgeworld and thudd guns. 4 S5 barrage blasts per 55 point unit in squads of 3. Putting ~10-20 wounds a turn on an enemy unit with a 3 gun unit is pretty darn effective. Deepstruck units are even more hilarious as you can get upwards of 50 hits off deepstruck units.

Again, all great ideas guys. You've given me a number of methods I can try out.

@Gomericus - I wish I could see all those RR charging, that would be fantastic! I'm definitely going to convert mine up.

@PrinceRaven - That will be Plan B, I've definitely got enough guardsmen to spare, might as well sacrifice some in the Emperor's name.

@Ailaros - Definitely going to give the defensive Punisher a whirl. I have the parts and I've never used one.

@Zephoid - I'd love to get a hold of some Thudd guns. They will definitely be a future purchase.
