I have a DIY Chapter and I want to have a relic but people get bent out of shape when it comes to these sort of things. Your chapter cannot have something to significant because it makes your chapter quote on quote special. My Primarch is Rogal Dorn and I want a weapon or some form of equipment is that asking for to much, if so explain why? Also if anyone has an idea for a relic that I can call my own without breaking the my marines are more special code please share.

It depends on your founding, really. Chapters from the second founding tend to be more likely to have relics of their primarchs simply because when they were founded their primarchs were alive (With the exception of Ferrus, Sanguinius and the Lion and Vulkan who were absent) and would have probably left them relics as a parting gift and sign of respect.
A chapter founded in say, the 21st founding will obviously have less chance of having a relic of their primarch. This doesn't mean that an older chapter wouldn't have bestowed a relic as a gift to them. If your chapter is old enough they could potentially have a relic left by, say, their original Chapter Master.
In the end, it's your chapter. Do whatever you want. Just try to avoid going over the top for the sake of taste.

Maybe you could have a relic of a fallen opponent, like Yarrick's Orkish Power Claw.

I don't see how a newer chapter haveing relic's would be weird. You can find relic's on any number of space hulk's, forgetten shrine world's anything of that nature.

I would also go down the route of earned loot - a relic that's been wrested from the clutches of an enemy or discovered by chance in some backwater. Along these lines it could even be a Primarch relic.
Mary-Sue Marines are admittedly all too sad, but I would give funny looks at anyone who got bent out of shape over a *relic*...

Personally I'd be a little more creative than the standard - gift of the primarch route.
It could be as simple as the power sword of the first chapter master of when the chapter was formed, or a gift from the Ordo Hereticas, or the duelling sword of a imperial guard colonal who went above and beyond in a battle involving the chapters first company and as a mark of respect, the sword was taken on by the chapter and is still used to this day.
Also, a relic doesn't require special rules, it could be a Broadsword that simply acts as a powerfist in game, or a master-crafted weapon (remember these are rare, or should be) or a guardian spear/glave with a combi weapon attached - again, in games terms, your character just has a power axe and a combi bolter.
Special rules a relic does not make.

Good advice so far.
Make it something that comes from your own chapter's heroes - easy
Make it something from a primarch - maybe something that went some way with him, but isn't iconic/ in the novels. Both Guilleman and the Lion have extensive collections of rare weapons, mostly from defeated civilizations, and some of these are very effective pieces of exotic tech. Dorn seems like a man who appreciates engineering, so why not?
Make it a gift from an imperial institution - as a mark of respect or in gratefulness for saving them, some individuals or factions (AdMech for example) have access to tech that is rare even for astartes.

I say find a relic - your chapter could believe its a relic of dorn but have no proof or even be wrong.
The Soul drinkers found the Voidspear or whatever it was called, which they thought was a Rogal Dorn relic and turned out to be nothing to do with him - but they'd venerated that spear for ages
I'm surprised the Blood Ravens haven't come up yet - they've got loads of relics. Bunch of kleptomaniacs
So you could even have a relic of another primarch - it doesn't have to be Dorn.
I think you should have your chapter 'reappropriate' a Blood Ravens relic. Its not like they could complain to anyone for fear of being investigated themselves

Isn't it like that with some of the christian relics in the world today? That, if they were all genuine, some saints would have had to have WAY too many limbs and such?

My 2 cents...
Resist the temptation to make it a weapon. I've always liked the non-combat relics - like back-mounted battle standards or a piece of ancient power armor.

I would have no problem with the weapon so long as it isn't the exact shield used by Dorn, or in game terms, a relic that is unbeatable/overpowered. The galaxy is pretty large, any number of weapons could have been crafted/lost/left behind. But if it is rare, a captain or master should use it, and it might be something that defines your chapter. If your chapter is highly disciplined and take pride in colors/battles then armor or banners would be best, versus' having an especially aggressive chapter that prefers close-combat then a powerfist, axe or maul could be the most valued relic. Hope I helped instead of making things more complicated.

I'd totally go with a recovered relic. It could even lead to some tension with the Fists themsleves, who may feel that such an item rightfull belongs to them.
Other posiblities:
- Perhapes the Fists bestowed the relic upon the chapter when it was founded.
- Some chapters venerate the chapter master from their founding in much the same way as the Legions do their Primarchs, maybe the relic is from that chapter master.
