I'm a bit confused on something with Tesla type weapons. The rule states that "For every to hit roll of 6, the target suffers 2 additional automatic hits". That means that if I roll a 6 with a tesla weapon, it counts as 3 hits, correct? 1 for the initial hit on the roll of 6 and the 2 additional automatic hits? A buddy of mine seems to have in his head that a roll of 6 counts as 2 hits, but according to RAW it should be 3.

It is 1 hit, with 2 additional hits for 3 total.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

That's what I thought. Thanks for clearing it up!

.....related question:
Thinking about this in my own games, I'm sure my FMCs/Stormraven have fired upon by tesla weapons. I've never really considered it before, but do folks think those "automatic hits" get applied to Flyers/FMCs? They don't roll to hit...but the tesla DID roll to hit...

I'm inclined to say no, since auto-hits simply cannot hit Flyers. Any argument to the contrary?

The weapon generates two extra hits on a to-hit roll of six. Nothing says it's a new auto-hitting weapon or new shots that somehow didn't roll to hit. It's just two extra hits.

Besides, if the gun instead caused d3 hits... would you even be thinking about whether any hit beyond the first rolled to hit or not?

Seems like it would still fly, as I understand it. The weapon did roll to hit, after all, it just hits more often on a roll of 6. That's just my take on it.

Q: When making Snap Shots, do weapons with a special rule or
effect that only applies on To Hit rolls of a 6 retain these abilities?
For example Necron Tesla weapons? (p13)
A: Yes.

From the FAQ,

Nothing denies fliers being hit by weapons that auto hit, it comes from the snap shot rule. So they would still work.

This is worth clarifying, to avoid confusion. The following two FAQs apply, and if I've read them right, means that while things that "automatically hit" (that is, things that indicate a To Hit roll is needed but is automatically passed) can still hit flyers, things that don't use a To Hit roll at all can't.

Q: Does a weapon that hits automatically, still hit automatically
when making a Snap Shot? (p13)
A: Yes.

Q: How do maelstroms, novas and beams – or indeed any weapon
that doesn’t need to roll To Hit or hits automatically – interact with
Zooming Flyers and Swooping Flying Monstrous Creatures? (p13)
A: Only Snap Shots can hit Zooming Flyers and Swooping
Flying Monstrous Creatures. Therefore, any attacks that use
blast markers, templates, create a line of/area of effect or
otherwise don’t roll to hit cannot target them. This includes
weapons such as the Necron Doom Scythe’s death ray or the
Deathstrike missile of the Imperial Guard, and psychic
powers that follow the rule for maelstroms, beams, and
novas.

it specifies weapons and targetting. the tesla is a weapon that rolls to hit, therefore it can target, and therefore hits fliers.

So you're right, but Tesla aren't covered;
