Hey there just was looking around secret weapon miniatures sit and saw they have powdered glass for snow effect!
I am a Glassblower and have extremely easy access to make my own glass "frit powder" which I would love to use on my minis!
Quick question to those who may know, but do they use clear glass powder or is it actually powdered white glass? I know when clear glass is powdered fine enough it appears white, but I mean I assume one could use white as well for a more "pure" snow or even mix the two. I woul really like to get into this as it could save me a TON in basing supplies!

I've heard of glass been used before but mixed with baking soda. don't know if it was clear or white though.
It was on a Sister of Battle model mounted on a cyborg horse - great mini. It was featured in Harbinger magazine but can't remember the artist.

As you said, clear glass ends up looking white, much like clear ice crystals end up looking white. I don't see any reason to depart from a direct parallel to the natural process, as I suspect the results would be either somewhat less realistic, if using too coarse a powder, or identical, if using a fine powder. As far as I know, the modeling products sold are made from clear glass, but I could be wrong. You may just have to experiment, yourself, to see if there's any benefit to using white glass. Not too many people are willing or able to grind their own stuff - consider running a test as service to the community.

Be sure to share your results! I'm particularly interested, as I have relatively easy access to scrap (clear) glass. If there's an easy enough way to grind it, I might build myself up a small store for the odd winter themed display model...
