So in a past game I played, A Rhino was shot by a assault cannon. I needed a 6 to pen it, and 6 is rending. Since it would already be a pen, do you need an extra d3 strength roll?

Do you need it? No. Is it fun to roll anyways to see what you get? Sure!

Okay! the context was though, I penned then rolled on the damage chart and my opponent kept insisting that that was the d3 of strength and inisited that it must be rolled.
Jimmes rustled: A little. it felt like hw as trying to cheat me out of a good roll, but he accepted it in the end and I was just wanting to make sure of it.

This is why it's always a good idea to state explicitly what you're rolling for. "d6 + 6 to pen.... 6, okay that's a pen, d6 on the damage table", as opposed to "d6 + 6 to pen, 6, that's a rend, extra d3..."

Well, it's always good form to say when skipping a roll. Like a S10 gun to the AV10 rear of a vehicle - even a 1 is a penetrating hit. Skipping makes sense but always say what you're rolling.

If you said something like, this die roll needs a 5 to glance and a 6 to pen, then rolled a 6, then said ok that is a pen, here is the damage chart roll I do not see his confusion.
If you just picked up the rend and rolled it again without alerting him to what the roll was for, then I can see his confusion.

I did alert him, hence the confusion on the d3 roll. It was a very rushed game though, so some communications where lost in the rush.

The only difference being with the rend you gain the +1 to damage roll from the AP2.
But yeah, skipping the roll is fine.

That is not how it works against vehicles...

Yeah, the AP2 doesn't apply to vehicles. It gets the +d3 pen instead of the AP2.

Please reread, and notice AP2 is only when rolling to-wound
You have made quite a common mistake however

I have to agree with everyone who says Skipping a roll that doesn't matter is fine 'If' (and only If) you've made it clear to your opponent that you are doing so.
Normally and according to the rules, you are supposed to roll the 'Rending' d3 before rolling on the vehicle damage chart. If you just toss the die and then toss another die, your opponent is well within his or her rights to presume that you are rolling the next die in sequence rather than skipping one. Communication is key, yah?

I actually didn't know I had to roll extra in this situation until he put up a fuss about it, so sorry about that I guess.
Thanks for letting me now about etiquette though!

It's just a good idea in general to announce what it is exactly that you are rolling. It not only prevents confusion, it also helps catch unintentional mistakes.
Me: "So 6 hormagaunts made it it into assault, 3 attacks each with the charge, 18 attacks, need X to hit."
Opp: "Didn't they get Rage when they failed Synapse?"
Me: "Oh right... 4 attacks each."
In fact that applies to any wargame, I'd say it's always good form to say what you are rolling, and what the target number is, if applicable.
