Hey Dakka, I’ve been looking into casting parts of miniatures but am unsure whether to go through with it. Specifically I want some camo cloaks for an IG Harker Vet Squad but there are no official plastic camo cloaks for IG that I know of. So I’ve been planning to get some Space Marine Scouts and make casts of their cloaks which I will then fit onto my Catachan. But then I started to question the legality of it and after some digging around I can’t find a suitable answer.

I know right away that selling casts of GW’s IP is a big no-no, as is making casts of whole models. But I am unsure whether it’s okay to do what I plan to do since I’m only making casts of the cloaks, will not sell them and have no plans to make anything more than the cloaks.
So I was wondering if any of you guys have some insight into whether my plan is legal or not. If it isn’t legal then I’ll scrap the whole idea.

Also mods: I know I’m treading into iffy waters with this subject and I apologise if I’m breaking any forum rules, please move if I have placed this thread in an inappropriate forum.

Whether or not it is illegal is irrelevant, GW's lawyers do not care about trivial details like "it is legal" if you're doing something they don't like. Therefore discussing recasting is against forum rules and this thread will be locked soon.

Also it's irrelevant because, like downloading a song and other trivial offenses, nobody is ever going to know.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

If you are going to go to the trouble of casting cloaks, why not just sculpt yourself a master cloak, and then cast that. No legal grey areas that way.

I don't think anyone would care if you made casts for yourself, obviously selling them is illegal. Personally I wouldn't care if you DID cast whole models as long as you're not trying to sell them, it's kind of like the whole 3D printer argument. In the end what you do behind closed doors is between you and your models

As long as you don't sell them, and of course, like said earlier you could always try to sculpt and cast one yourself, THEN you can sell it. I think this is yet another case where GW and their unwillingness to sell bits is hurting more than helping them. Im sure if they came out with a line of "extra" bits like tons of camo cloaks for IG or just a pile of combi weapons or just stuff that people have to go to other bits manufacturers to get they would sell big

There are IG camo cloaks in the Command Squad box.

They're assuming you have a sniper on the guy, though, and they're prety dire to put together.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

First, asking for (free) legal advice on a discussion forum isn't going to get you any useful response.

Second, it would likely be easier to just sculpt your own out of greenstuff, for any number less than 100 of them.

Finally, please don't discuss casting of a third party's copyrighted works on Dakka.
