Yo Yo,

My gamer buddies and still play 5th edition, so forgive me for living in the past.

I play Vanilla Space marines and am having large issues with my opponent's CSM army.

I have tried various Army lists, yet I am still getting my a#$@ handed to me. He usually takes two large (20 man) units of Noise Marines, several smaller units of Marines and usually several units of 2 or 3 obliterators.
My main issue is I just don't have the numbers to survive the huge number of shots (something like 50 dice per unit of NMs)

I'm at a loss to what to do, plasma weapons keep letting me down, assault units don't last to assault, armour gets smashed, long range weapons aren't doing nearly enough damage.

Help me Obi Wan Dakka, You're my only hope.

Well, the new SM codex is out VERY soon so it remains to be seen.

Neither is playing 5th edition.

Those noise marines are stripping better cover saves that are much easier to get. Those obliterators can now deepstrike with a friendlier mishap table, and are more likely to arrive earlier. Noise marines also have access to salvo weapons - something which didn't even exist in 5th ed (it's what's putting out so many shots - technically he shouldn't even be able to fire them as the rules for them don't exist in your version of the game.

The simple fact is that CSM was balanced for 6th edition rules, not for 5th ed ones. If a 6th ed codex is overpreforming in a 5th ed game, perhaps it's because it was meant for a 6th ed game.

No, he is still using 5th ed.

The main reason we are playing 5th ed. is because we have all the resources and can't afford newer stuff

Newer stuff? All you need is a new rulebook. You can buy one on eBay, for cheap. That's literally the only thing you need to roll over to a new rules edition.

Unless you're saying he's using the 5th ed CSM codex, in which case I'm actually rather baffled as to why you're having problems with noise marines. Old noise marines were terrible.

Maybe I haven't explained well enough.

Yeah he is using 5th ed. CSM.

His Noise marines absolutely destroys me, each nit can dish out 50 dice worth of damage.

5th ed CSM noise marines with sonic blasters used to cost 25 points apiece. That's 1.5 times the number of bolter shots at close range for 1.6 times the price. The odds aren't in your opponents favor here.

Odds are, you're just not bringing enough marines. Or you're not bringing enough drop pods or land raiders to get them into closer ranges more quickly/safely.
