Subject: Artillery Profile? What's the point?

I've read the rule book a couple of times now and I don't understand the point of an artillery gun having wounds.
I can see why it has a toughness: use when shooting at it.
I can see why it has a save: guardian benefits from a better save behind it.
However why does it have 2 wounds when shooting attacks are resolved against the crewman and you can use look out sir to reallocate wounds??
Someone show me I'm being silly and have misread something because it seems to completely confuse me.
Cheers

you can allocate wounds to the artillery if they are the closest model.

Wounds are assigned as normal. Usually this means closest model first.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

If you kill the crew, the guns are removed as well.

This means in practice that all but one crew per gun tend to stand in front of the guns. :p
