Hey ya'll,

I am starting a new Iyanden themed army, and I need help selecting the right units.I've only had one game with them and they performed really well, and they just hoofed it acrossed the board. I want to run mostly Wraithguard/Blades, and some Dire Avengers, but I would like to make sure I will have a competitive list. Here is what I have for my list so far and my thoughts on them-

Avatar ( I find him very useful )
Spiritseer ( an auto take, maybe get more? )

Wraithguard with D-Scythes x 5 ( They did nothing offense wise really, but I could see putting them in a wave serpent )
Wraithguard with Ghost Axes and shields x 5 ( Just added these guys )
Wraithguard - unopened box, so I can go either way- wraith cannons, ghost swords, or more axes and or d-scythes
Dire Avengers x 5 ( Very useful )
Guardians x 10 ( Have not used these at all in a game, should I not bring them? )

Hemlock Wraithfigther ( not good against Space Marines, but might come in handy vs low leadership xenos )

Wraithknight with Heavy Wraithcannon ( Going to take these two as much as possible, and they look great )
Wraithknight with Heavy Wraithcannon

I have no Waveserpents at present, but the other stuff I have on hand, I will not use, which is: Fire Dragons, Howling Banshees.. Basically I am torn if I should run a pure Wraithguard list and drop the DA's and Guardians. Maybe add a Crimson Hunter? Maybe a 3rd Wraithknight? Really there is just way too many good choices in this codex, from Dark Reapers and Warp Spiders, but I don't want to stray too far away from the theme I have going so far.

So I guess in closing, should I stay more pure Wraithguard theme, or add in other units to shore up any short-comings the Wraithguard have? Hopefully this thread is not asking too many questions. Thanks in advance

If you want to run a fluff army, more Spiritseers, and drop the Avengers/Guardians.

Buy Wave Serpents. Give them Scat lasers, shuri-cannon and holo-fields.

Personally, I run Ulthwe so my list is chock full of Guardians. With one or two Aspect squads.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The choice of armament for wraithguard is pretty easy - D-scythes if they're in wave serpents, wraithcannon if they're on foot.

The rationale for this is that in a Serpent, the D-scythes are easy to position and deliver. But, on foot, they're far slower, and you need the extra range of the wraithcannons.

As to a pure wraith army - it can work. You're going to need to address long ranged Anti-Tank fire, either with wraithknights, wraithlords, or tank hulls of some sort.

Wraithblades are quite killy. I would supplement the wraith* toughness with farseers and spiritseers.

I haven't done it yet, but I imagine a spiritseer council with a few wraithknights would be quite difficult to play against, given that they could get multiple renews and really cause problems for the opponent.

I just ordered 2 more boxes of Wraithguard to boost my troop count. I will play around building some lists and see how many Spiritseers I can fit in.

I am interested in running a 3rd Wraithknight, but more so for modeling purposes.

After watching Jy2's latest battle report, a Waveserpent and Guardian list looks brutal for me.

My first thoughts were:

1) no Farseer?
2) no Wraithlords?

These two are *kind of* mutually exclusive. I can see the value in taking the Avatar, but Wraithknights are that much tougher to crack (and that less dangerous) that a canny opponent will gun down the Avatar first. Wraithlords still provide target saturation for the Avatar while still packing a punch of their own and they're a good deal cheaper to boot.

On the other hand, the Farseer's buffs can be incredible. Death Mission is something of a duff and with spirit marking, Guide is not *so* helpful, but Doom and Fortune in particular can be game-changers. You also have the option of plumping for Guide/Prescience as Primaris powers, to buff the Dire Avengers, Guardians and any Wraith units not getting the benefit of spirit marking.

Taking more Spiritseers is a definite. I would go for one per every 3 Wraith units you have (that includes Lords and Knights). The benefits should be obvious - an extra spirit mark, and an extra Battle Focus bubble.

Lastly, definitely get a Wave Serpent for your Scythes. They're amazing anyway, but you will need to make the absolute most of them if you come across any horde lists. I'm guessing this first battle that went really well was against an army with a relatively low model count - with bigger mobs, all the other Wraithguard/Blade units really struggle (even the twin swords don't really put out enough attacks).

A Wraithlord is a fun kit to pose and even more fun to paint! Throw one in there.

Do you have the Iyanden supplement? If so the Wraithlord/Knight makes an excellent Warlord in the slot, wraithlords are better for cheaper ranged shooting platforms with some melee while knight can do both well, with a tougher weapon to boot.

If your local scene lets you use forgeworld then try some hornets, they do well in competitive list. Use shadow specters from forgeworld as counts as warp spiders as they look fantastic. Wraithguard are alot better then wraith blades so go with more of them for now.

@ Super Ready-
I was looking at psychic powers for Eldar and realized that Spiritseers cannot take the other half of powers, only farseers. I will have to figure if I can fit one in my list, as I defenitley see the benefits.

If I take zero guardians and dire avengers, I just may drop the Avatar, as the 12" fearless bubble is not needed for a fearless army. And for the points, A unit of Wraithguard are equal in toughness, can gain a better invulnerable save, can hit as hard- minus smash attack. So I will experiment more in list building, by not taking the avatar.

@ Thokt-
I have 2 on hand so far, but not one with the glaive... Maybe down the road?

@ ZebioLizard2-
I do have the Iyanden supplement, and I did choose one of my wraithknights to be the warlord. My spriritseer did use the wraithforge stone to add a wound during my game, and ended the game with 3 wounds. I succesfully denied my opponent "slay the warlord", and he just took a massive amount of fire. He may not have earned his points back in destroying units, but the fact he attracted so much firepower, really was a benefit.

I would like to add a Wraithlord, just to complete my collection, but the Wraithknights just seem too good to pass up. A Wraithseer would seem like an excellent choice to add to my collection as well.

@ Zonde4-
My local scene does indeed allow use of forgeworld! I looked at your suggestions and those models just look absolutely beautiful, and I will seriously consider them.

Thanks to everyone's input, it is greatly appreciated and very helpful! Looks like I will have a lot of decisions to make, but I think the process will be much easier now. Kompai!
