I was browsing a lot of older 40k stuff recently and I ran onto a guy named titan136. He made some armored neophytes that I fell in love with and that I just had to copy. Black Templars dont get scouts, we get neophytes...basically the marines in training that are paired with a brother marine and fight in the same unit. But who in their right mind goes into combat with no armor and helmet. Scout armor just looks too weak for fellows who willingly charge into close combat against all the enemies of the Emperor. So I followed this guys example and trimmed down a helmet some, and used the armored arms. Let me know what yall think, I have a feeling this is the first of a bunch of these guys.
Now THIS guy looks ready to really fight alongside his heavier armored brothers. The only thing I am not super pleased with is my free hand shoulders...they are smaller and the decals are WAY too big on them in my opinion, so I had to paint them. Not perfect...but in the end they ARE just neophytes lol.

Well I have to think that in the year 40,000 (and especially in a shooty 6th edition) the first piece of advice a Templar would give a neophyte is "Here is your helmet, it keeps your brain in your skull when the bullets come for you. Always wear it."
Plus it has all sorts of sensors and a HUD and probably a 40k wifi network or something, why WOULDN'T you wear it?

looks good, but IMHO the helm is to iconic to standard marines, I'd go for some sort of veteran IG helmet or a 3rd party one with visor

You may be right. I'll look around and see if I like any other helmets better. This being the test model, better I decide now before I do up like 20 of them

I like it overall. The helmet does look, a little... off? Maybe its too big. I really like it though, almost has a space police vibe or something.
I've always liked the pauldron-less power armor arms on scouts for a bulked up look.
Something about the helmet... but a rather cool model.

I think Cadian heads are good when you wanna use scouts to make carapace armor/stormtroopers for IG, but I think they will make his neophytes look less like mini Marines in this case. Maybe though, its been done before and it doesn't look bad at all.
Pig iron heads look fine, especially if they're just a tad smaller than full marine helmets. Just beware the necks/joins, scouts have kind of weird neckbitz as you know.
Whatever you decide, they're already better neophytes than just plopping stock scouts into your unit

Well...the goal is a full helmet. I know there are a ton of marines that fight with their heads exposed but I always thought that silly. Would love to stay within the easily gw recognized heads but most have faces all exposed. Maybe elysian but I don't think you can get just the heads. Looking more and more like the pig iron...plus they come in a 20 pack and i have 2 crusader blobs of neophytes to do.

This is such a cool idea, I did some googling for you The heads totally come on a sprue from forgeworld, 12 for 10 english monies (pounds, right), so they're well over a dollar a piece, but you CAN get them. Ebay may help, I didn't check extensively. I was going to look at the warstore, but they don't sell GW bitz anymore (WUT!?), so ebay may be best choice other than direct order from FW If you wonder what it looks like, goto here: a thread on warseer. I didn't read much into the thread, but the pictures are nice. It looks like he just did headswap, not the arms thing as you have done. ^picture from that thread, if people can't be bothered to go visit other forums So, I'm not sure if it fits your budget, but they do look preety sweet with the EDT heads

Hey, just thought I'd chip in and show how I do my neophytes.
Sorry for the crap picture. I used chaos warrior heads and trimmed off the horns. I feel they shouldn't be donning the space marine helmet and this gives them a sort of poverty version of it.

He looks very solid, dont worry about the freehand, it looks good, a lot of people would do far worse

I like the idea behind what you are doing, but I agree that they should wear a different type of helmet.
