Went camping over the weekend and my (ultramarines playing) son took the Tau Codex release Wite Dwarf with him. Suddenly boy wants Tau for his upcoming birthday but I'm at a loss. No Tau when I used to play and I play orks and chaos, what shall I get him?

thought perhaps codex, battleforce and an hq but don't know if battleforce is a waste of time. We both play for fun but he does like winning....thoughts?

budget £130 ish gbp

Codex, Battleforce, HQ and a box of fire warriors to start. Or wait on the HQ and find out what he would like as an HQ after he reads the codex.

Battleforce is not a waste of time for the Tau it is actually pretty spiffy.

Not a big fan of the battleforce personally. Just because I never use stealth suits.

There are plenty of options though on what's good. If you want to try and do something simple and small games you could go with ethereal or fireblades with pulse rifle firewarriors.
Other than that; Kroot
Piranha
Skyray/hammerhead
Crisis suits I'd say are a must since you can use them for commanders and come with plenty of drones
Riptides
Pathfinders
all these are good purchases. The rest of the codex is more for flavor/fun if your son finds something he ends up liking after reading more into the codex and trying things out.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

For fun games the battleforce is perfect all the units are useable.

The recommendation of HQ, Battleforce, Codex is a good one for fun games.

For competative you would start with kroot/firewarrior boxes, an ethereal and a riptide.

Your son will really love a riptide.

IIRC The battle force box is playable straight out of the box.

So is probably a decent start

The battleforce would actually be a decent start. Gives you two minimum squads of Firewarriors, hand ful of drones, Piranha, Stealth suits, and three crisis suits (one of which can be made into a commander). It gives a pretty good taste for what Tau have to offer. It also gives a very good base to expand on.
