I'm looking to add an allied warband do my Erebor Dwarves (Grim Hammers + Regular Erebor Dwarf Warriors). I think my biggest weak spot is lack of missle weapons so I'm thinking Men of Dale would be fluffy, but if I recall, the allied warband still has the 1/3 bow limit. I could do elves as well. What do you all think and who is the best captain to lead the entire force?

Elves are really the go-to for allies with bows, and I think the 1/3 limit only applies to the army, not individual warbands, so if you take no bow dwarves and run them 2:1 with elves, you can get a good number of elf shooters. I'd go wood elves to keep it cheap. Similarly, rangers might be good to look at, for the same reasons.

As for a leader for the whole army, dwarves have a ton of solid heroes. Gimli is always good, Dwalin and Gloin are very cool and hits hard, and Thorin is obviously very powerful (although I think he is rather expensive).

None of these is themed except thorin and dwalin.I would add dwarf rangers for archery because free peoples says that they wander around killing orcs and making travel easier.Or If you don't want to be themed that's ok your army and stuff.

If you want themed, but still want something with a lot of archers, you could use an Arnor list, and say that they're a tribe of people wandering Rhovanion.

I've thought about both. Dwarf Rangers would be nicely themed, esp if led by Thorin or Dwalin. I play lower point games, so Dwalin might be an effective use of points.

Another question. Are all dwarves considered to be the same army or are Erebor dwarves distinctly different than Durin's Folks for the sake of being considered allies.

I'm hoping they are considered all the same army, so that I could pick up Dwarf Rangers with just bows.

<--- Noob. I don't understand how that solves the problem.

Typically, allied contingents are subject to the 1/3 bow rule. Given that neither of the Erebor dwarf units have bow options, ideally, I'd like to pick up a small unit of dwarf rangers that are 100% bow armed.

Yes but someone has to LEAD them. The dwarf captain is the cheapest option to do so.Do you think I mean the new one?

I see now, you are just talking about the mandatory leader for each contingent.

For good guys you don't have much option for armies without the 1/3 bow limit. If you don't like the Arnor idea, your second best bet is using guys iwth the strongest bow strength possible.

We're only playing 350 points, so I went with a unit of Grim Hammers and a unit of Warriors or Erebor led by Dwalin. I have a box of Dwarf Rangers on order, who will be a little bit fluffier with my core units. They will be led by Kili for larger games or as a replacement for the Warriors.
