Hey everyone, as the title of this thread says, you can probably tell that i am curious on what would be a great ally choice for SM's, i thought at first that maybe eldar would help, but then they seemed to be too soft, and not exactly- 'long-game material' , but i still like them, and how they would work on the field. I thought that ig would work also, but i would need mostly tanks (i think), but then the grey knights idea i came across last night, seemed to really make it work. I heard that the gk termis/paladins are OP, and work well, when other ally units, are leading the charge, and they get to be the powerhouse in the middle of the field killing stuff. (true?) I run regular SM's, with mainly infantry, a rhino, vindicator, and thunderfire cannon, along with a librarian in termi armor as my HQ. But lately my army hasnt been fairing too well, with how the dice roll, and sometimes end up getting incinerated ,blown up, or just hardcore eliminated.... Sure, I have the good days where my termis, thunderfire cannon, and vindicator smash and bash, but then somehow, the dice just turn on me.....SO.........i had the idea of maybe switching out a couple tac squads/termi squads for grey knight squads, and a couple gk termi/paladin squads, (and i will have to get a gk HQ), to make my army more of a powerhouse that can keep the pain coming at my opponent's army. My plan was to maybe replace a couple of my tac squads with paladin squads, and keep rolling with my regular setup. But my main concern, is if the gk paladins or gk termis can hold objectives or not, and i REALLY need something powerful, and hard to kill on the field, that can hold objectives. Can they? I heard they can, but i dont have really anyway of knowing,(the gk guy i know is too new to the game, and hasnt really played any actual regular 1500 pt+ game yet) game and i wanna make sure i know that i want to use gk before i even buy the codex, or any models. Also, the dreadknight looks good, but would/could it do the job? so, if i go ahead with the gk idea the army would look like this-

2-sq's of sm termis
1- 10 man sm tac squad
1-vindicator
1 rhino
1-thunderfire cannon w/gunner
1-sm libr. w/termi armor
2- squads of gk termis/paladins
Could i add a dreadknight? I have also seen an idea that consists of-

1-kaldor Draigo
2-squads of gk termis/paladins
400 pts of anything else..... so i was thinking of maybe adding in my 2 termi squads to make it 1500 or so pts, or maybe my vindicator? i almost was thinking of maybe changing my whole sm army into a gk army, but idk..... any help/ideas would be greaty appreciated! And thank you for your time in reading this!

I would wait as you dont want to shell out money on units that the new space marine codex can do better at.

Grey knights are cool but I would pick one of the battle brother choices as the options are stronger.

I would in my biased opinion choose Tau as an ally. Tau provide more range that the space marines lack and also gives its a little more mobility with the battle suits. In addition they are battle brothers so you can have the tau lead by marines to give them more umph.

I feel like IG are a pretty ideal Marine ally since they can give the army long range shooting, cheap scoring troops, and some big guns that the army is usually lacking. It lets your Marines be mobile shocktroops, as they should be.

This is basically the core of my suggestion to bring Armored Battlegroup. The problem is that the allied detachment probably won't be able to score (you don't bring ABG for access to five-man guard squads) but the upshot is you get a BS4 Russ with special ammunition (including Beast Hunter shells for those pesky MCs) and up to seven additional Leman Russ tanks. You also get a 6th Edition Codex, with its own Warlord Traits table among other perks, including tank company specific orders.
