I originally Discovered 40k somewhere around '99-'00. The first models I purchased were the old LotD box set and the 3rd edition starter. (SM vs DE). But not knowing where and who to play with my best friend and I quickly packed up our stuff never to go back.

Fast Forward a decade and now I have a 40k problem. More specifically a SM collecting problem. In the short time I have rediscovered the hobby I have been collecting SM plastic crack at a crazy rate. I have a small apocalypse sized C:SM army in the form of my Silver Skulls. Then wanting variety I bought up 3 boxes each of assault and DC to mix and match the kits so I could field 30 DC or just BA assault marine force. I have also added the partial contents to two DV boxes, a DW command box, and 4 sets of DA veterans to field a DA force (not to mention my Puppets War vindicators (2) and my Land Raider Ares conversion).

Sitting under my hobby table I have probably 50 more tactical marines, a stormraven (with CH extension), LR (with CH inconclast kit) some scouts, a LSS, a defiler (just because they are awesome), and other stuff all unassembled.

Oh, and I still have my tau, and my friends tau which he said I could have, which probably comes in around 3000 pts. 14 suits, Old Farsight, 2 devilfish, 2 hammerheads, something like 60 fire warriors(some NIB), and 60-80 kroot (half NIB), 3 old broadsides, some old metal pathfinders and stealth suits and entirely too many drones.

Now, I also believe in painting all this crap. Most of my C:SM is painted or has paint on it. None of the other SM forces are playable yet. The tau are still boxed up. I have the new codex but still haven't awoken them from their slumber.

And now i'm wanting a Tyranid army..... I'm currently watching one on ebay. And I also want to start a 30k Salamanders Army using Anvil Industries stuff (I have 5 guys so far lol).

So, there is a point to this...maybe.

I'm wondering if selling the Tau would fund a playable Tyranid army.
I'm sentimentally attached to the Tau because they are my first army and are what really hooked me into the 40k universe. I continued to read some BL and played all the DOW games in my 10 year hiatus from the HHHHHobby. However I think I could get over getting rid of the Tau if 1. I don't play with them before selling and 2. I enjoy Tyranids.

Option 2 is to sell the Tau to continue to fund my power armor addiction (Salamanders and/or chaos). I beginning to realize I am a true sucker for power armor, andam starting to think I can get enough variety of play by just fielding different PA codexes, ie BA and DA.

Option 3 is just hold what I have and unbox the Tau after painting up all 3 SM armies. By then we will be well past the Tau FOTM frenzy.

I guess I am really just getting this self inflicted dilemma off my chest and looking for a plastic crack addict support group.

What would you do?

I would sell the Tau, personally, otherwise you have too much on your plate to really get the enjoyment deserved out of the marines.

I appreciate that sentiment. Because as I struggle with making modelling progress on 3 different SM armies the boxed up tau is like a silent shadow over my shoulder that I will never get to shed light on.

Oh god, this sounds like me ten years from now except with Orks. I already have 150 or so unbuilt models and a fleet of scratch built vehicles piling up...

There must be a reason you haven't used the Tau yet. Have you seen how they play? Maybe their playstyle doesn't match with you. Way I see it, theres no point getting this stuff and not using it!

Ha! Take it from a long time collector... you are far off from the hilarious problems.

I cleaned up recently and found 3 defilers I forgot I had unassembled.

I have 2 titans sitting ready to build...

This is just the surface ;-)

I would sell the Tau now while they are in extremely high demand. I have a hunch that when their next codex comes out they will be seeing a large revision (nerf).

This will make it more realistic for you to start the Tyranids army your excited about & I have a feeling that they are going to be absolutely brutal this edition.

Rumor has it Warriors will have toughness 5, hormagaunt 18" charge, Tyranids allying with themselves etc

I recently had to part with 7k of Necrons, 5k of DA and 2k of DKoK because I had to much on my plate. The feeling sucks at first but feels like a weight of your shoulders once you do it.

Also selling filthy Tau for our supreme overlords, the Nids is always a positive thing.

If you sell the Tau, it sounds like you will regret it later. Let them slumber for now. If you are looking for extra cash, I'd sell extra marines. It sound like you don't have quite the attachment to the BA/DA forces. With the new C:SM codex, I suspect that's going to keep your focus for a bit, keep with that.

If you have stuff that's been in the "things to do" queue for a number of years, ask yourself if you ever are going to get around to it. I know sometimes I like the concept of a project a lot better the the production of it, so it keeps getting shuffled to the back of the bench.

Selling miniatures will never get you what they were worth.

Basically you only be making what, 50% of what they originally cost or less.

So you sell say $200 worth of Tau but only to buy $50 of Tyranids? Maybe you can get a better deal than that, but I never see it.

I say hold on to the Tau and start saving. Even if you sell, you will never have enough Tyranids that you will want, espically if they get a new release, they will even be more expensive and you will have less Nids.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I appreciate everyone's input. I truly have an addiction. I see that now. I will probably keep some of the tau, at least 1500 pts or so. Enough to play some small games down the road.

I am currently watching an eBay auction that ends today on a sizable Nid army. I will let you know how that turns out. LOL

We shall see if the Emperor's will is stronger than the Hivemind.

Goodness I write a wall of text. Best I can suggest:

Summary:

Keep your first army: Tau.

Commit to a SM army you really like (2 at most!) and sell off the alternate army stuff.

Your CSM sound like my Eldar: do you really want them? Lose one of the SM armies to justify them if you plan to keep.

What I did:

Started with CSM/Demons.
I keep every last bit of them and 1/5th is playable. Love hate these guys. Everything I know about converting is from this army, painting a squad at a time I learned so much. Cannot give them up even if they become the next Tyranid fiasco.
Your "learning army" may be a mistake to let go.

Collected Inquisition/GK (to take on Chaos!!) wanted allies so got Marines and decided on BT (became my main army). Got Imperial Guard as well with same intent. This "Triad" is my main go-to now for fooling around with allies.
Your second, more informed decision army "tends" to be the one you play with the most: most proud of.

Started Eldar. Got 2000 points worth. Gave it all to a cousin some 10 years ago. Never looked back, even now. He built on it, there is something to be said to sell/give an army to someone you get to see/play with and get to see what you gave up from time to time.
A whim or flavor of the month army tends to get shelved or fielded only as a "surprise".

Got Tau when they first came out. Played them heavily in assembled, primed (white) with full magnets. Looked at it all one day and asked: "Can I paint all this in any reasonable time?" I sold the whole thing for about 30% more which took some of the sting away. I feel some measure of regret still.
The "cool" army, something that hits your "esthetics". I keep thinking I REALLY should not have got rid of it. My logical side tells me I needed to draw a line in the sand at that time (and see if I can say no).

Good luck! Sounds like you have the same level of "habit" let me know if you find a place to detox.
