This is what I've cooked up so far with my budget...

Rune Priest: Divination. 100

10 Grey Hunters: plasma gun; plasma gun; power weapon; Wolf Standard; Mark of the Wulfen. 235
• Rhino
10 Grey Hunters: plasma gun; plasma gun; power weapon; Wolf Standard; Mark of the Wulfen. 235
• Rhino

3 Thunderwolf Cavalry: 3× storm shield. 240

5 Long Fangs: missile launcher; 2× plasma cannon; 2× lascannon. 190

1,000 points

I'm going into a new meta that has a great variety of other armies. I thought the above list has some good balance as a starting point.

There aren't too many flyers, but there are lots of MC. Not a lot of heavy tanks either, but a fair amount of transports.

Hence the config on the Long Fangs and the PG on the GH.

Looks solid, no real glaring weaknesses here. I'm not sure you need shields on all the TWC, and the power weapons on the GH would be better dropped, as MOTW is just as good. That would save you a few points to spend as you like.

If you're looking for things to add to this, I'd suggest a TW lord and some more GH (you should be looking at one GH squad per 500 points, generally speaking).

Yeah, that's the plan for the next 500.

Got a firm idea in my head for that.

The shields on the TWC are there to make them more survivable vs the other nutbreaker units. Just a precaution really.

I have to agree with the PW on GH. It's a lot of points for not a lot of return. I could get Terminator armour for the Rune Priest with it, making him more survivable too.

How many is too many TWC? I like the models and was thinking of going for a full squad to support the Thunderwolf Lord at higher pts levels.

For TWC, it depends on what you want them to do. If you want them to roll over weak units by the handful, then 3 will usually suffice, but if you want a serious competition with deathstars then maxing out is justifiable, but a lot of points, and will die like GH to anything with a force weapon (GK are especially brutal here).

Personally, I'd keep just the unit of 3 and the lord, as it is good enough for the former and has the versatility to split into 2 units that can both wreck weak units should you need more coverage. At 2000+, an argument can be made for a thunderstar, but then you're looking at 500 points minimum for the squad and kitted-out lord, and more for equipment, and the extra attacks and power will be useless against most targets, so you are paying a lot for ablative wounds and still are unlikely to take on most deathstars. I agree it can be cool, but is not the best use of points.

If you want more, though, then a couple of of squads of 2-3 rather than one big one will allow you more diversity, force the opponent to split his fire, and mean you can take on more targets.

Cheers.

I've written all my lists from 1k to 1850 and the big unit of TWC only come in at 1850 games.

I also have a Quad Gun from 1750 onwards as well as the obligatory Long Fangs squads in the above configuration.

Gone for the GH squad per 500 too. Looking solid so far.
